Question Tried this ? in Smithing Forum: about a rear sight...

...on a Model of 1955 (pre-Model 25) N-frame 45ACP: is S&W part# 223300000 the (or, possibly "a"?) correct replacement for the rear sight?

Thanks!

I don't know the answer, but have a Model of 1955; so perhaps we can at least define what you're looking for.

Is it a complete rear sight assembly---or the blade---or---??

S&W part# 223300000 is not the correct part # for a 1955 n frame that part number is for the more modern round front type sight.

Model number guns are not my thing, but I may have something here. S&W #223200000 is a rear sight assembly (with a white outline blade) for a 29-3 with a 3" barrel. There's another, presumably with a regular blade, for the same gun. I don't know what difference the barrel length makes, but the 29 frame is (at least was) the same (or essentially the same) as the Model of 1955----so it ought to fit.

All this is from Brownells---and they show nothing for pre-model number guns.

Rear sight blades do come in different heights, but that is about the limit of my knowledge of specifics. I imagine the basic blade is the same now as it was then, except for height. Generally replacement blades come as a kit with a windage screw and nut, as the original screw must be twisted off to remove it.

I looked up the part number and it comes up at brownells and midway but both show the round front type sight not the square with would be on a older 1955 model.

I really hope S&W part #223300000 on Midway is the rear sight assembly for K-, L- and N-frames... I appreciate all the responses and actually have 2 K-frames if this doesn't work out. My belief (hope?) was that actual N-frame (or K-?) compatibility would extend backwards prior to the specific numerical model designation years?

i.e., a "pre-Model 25", a "pre-Model 15", etc.

As for my intent: to have a replacement factory rear sight assembly.

P.S. As of a couple minutes ago they still had one available on Clearance...

The part number you give is for a sight for more recent production guns built since the mid 90's. The front of the tang is rounded. Here's a pic of it from Brownell's:

My guess is it won't fit a Model of 1955....

It might fit, but it would be a "close but no cigar" fit---which is to say it might work---but it ain't right.

Most importantly, is the spacing of the hole for securing the sight to the frame. It was relocated at one point, and I'm pretty sure current models will not line up for a Pre mod. The hole was moved rearward, to get it out of line with the B/C gap. I'm not sure when this was, but believe it was in the 70's or 80's. Trying to locate older ones id not easy. Took me several months and about $125 to find one.

Here you have it straight from the mouth of Brownells.

having just gone through this process with a model 27-2, I think I should inform everybody that the sight kit comes with the blade, nut, and screw. It does not have the spring or the plug thatgo in the head of the adjustment screw.
