Please help identifying age of this 38 special ctg
so I have a neighbor with a 38 Special ctg revolver and has very little information on it other than he's had it almost 50 years and it used to belong to a police Officer. I'd like help trying to identify all I can about this gun I've taken multiple pictures of the weapon. I will attend to attach them to this thread the serial number on the base of the grip is 36665 there's also a number in the yoke is 7015.

Welcome to the forum.
That gun is a bit of a puzzle. Based on the serial, it's a Military Model 1902 from about 1903/04, one of the earliest versions of the later Military & Police Model. But it appears to have a square butt, which should not be at that serial; #36665 is too early. According to the Standard Catalog, the first square butt K-frames did not appear until about #58000. Does the metal frame under the grips conform in shape to the grips? The photo of the butt serial looks a bit like there is a round corner on the left.

The closest dated SN on my list to yours is 375xx which shipped in 2/04. But that would have been a Model of 1902, and it should have had a rounded butt, not a square butt (which is a characteristic of the later Model of 1905). It appears in excellent condition for its age and does not appear to have been refinished. The "U. S. Service Cartridge" is the .38 Long Colt, which the U. S. military used at that time. The .38 Special is just an elongated .38 Long Colt, and both will work. Please remove the MOP grips and provide us a picture of the grip frame if possible.

I'm not sure if it's the original fake Pearl grip could that be covering the fact that it might be a rounded but and not Square I don't know the difference

Look at the attached picture.
It shows the difference between a square and round butt frame. Based on the serial, your gun should have the round shape. But the grip panels have the square shape.
To be certain, you need to remove the screw that holds the grip panels to the frame, so the two panels come off and the shape of the metal frame becomes visible.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Those grips are likely Jay Scott round to square conversion grips. I see them for the I frame fairly frequently. These would be the first I've seen for K frames.

After closely examining it appears that the grip is square but the actual metal frame underneath is rounded it's almost like the grip covers aren't the correct ones

I will remove the grip panels today and compared to the picture that was posted and that way I can tell you whether the grip frame is rounded or square

Great. Then everything makes sense, and the identifying information we’ve provided above does match the gun.
