Default Austin Police Department 38/44 HD Rack #70 - New to me

Came across this one locally recently.
Appears to have been back to the factory twice, once in 1976 and it looks like again in 1978. Finish is in great shape. Stocks have some chips/nicks and do not number to the gun, all else is matching.

I also can see the numbers 38 44 stamped on the grip frame......I have not seen the model stamped like this before.....anyone else with one of these have that stamp??

According to the records, this one was among the first 110 of the 249 that was shipped in 1952 to APD.

Looks great Tom! You might shoot a PM to Ringo1597 as he has a lot of info on the Austin guns.

I have never seen 38 44 stamped like that before....I can only wonder what it means?

I have been in touch with a couple SWCA guys including Bill Patteson on this one......he was kind enough to send me a copy of his journal article on the Austin PD 38/44's which has some great info!

Yes, I am curious if any other surviving APD 38/44's are stamped on the grip frame with the numbers 38 44???
