New to me pre model 10
Picked this dandy up today. Serial # C550xx Seems to have been shot very little. Grips are correctly numbered to the frame.

Great pickup! And with prewar grips. I have one just like it. Mine is #58672

The details on the purchase: I recently found a nice condition pinned model 60 with box, paperwork and tools (actually my brother tipped me off on the deal) on an auction site. I agreed to his asking price of $400. The seller had an FFL but really didn't know much about older Smiths. I'm certainly no expert, but have learned a fair amount from the fine folks on this site. Before I sent him payment, he mentioned the gun I have shown in the above photos. He didn't know what is was. He sent me a few blurry pics and described it over the phone. I looked up the serial number and told him it was likely a 1948 or 1949 produced pre model 10. In the mean time, he was given the same information from a friend of his. I said I would be interested in buying this gun, as well as the model 60. He came back to me with a price of $350. I was expecting to hear something north of $500. Bottom line, both guns were shipped to my local FFL. Yesterday was like an early Christmas. I've spent a little time researching the pre model 10 and I haven't seen an example of this vintage with the earlier pre-war grips, as Jeff has mentioned above.

Great price; Merry Christmas! I looked at a slightly newer one (C122XXX) this week which was not in nearly as good condition as yours (had some barrel and frame wear and dings in likely original but not pre-war stocks like yours). Price was $390 OTD. Enjoy.

Steve: I have your snub's twin with SN C 532xx which shipped in March of 1949. It also has the pre war rb service stock that are numbered to the gun. BTW, I paid a whole bun more for mine and had been looking for a long time.

Very good deal indeed. Those 5 screw S&Ws are something special. I really like the pinned barrels as well even if that feature wasn't all that necessary, as some will say.
