Took 2 Smith and Wesson pistols to a gunshow over the weekend. Came home with 4. I got 2 Revolvers and 2 Autos. This by far the oldest. $350 OTD Diamond grips match gun. May leave the Tgrip it came with it.

Can't beat that; leave with two and come home with four. $350 OTD seems like a fair price.

The price isn‘t bad at all. The Pachmayr adapter (not a T-grip) dates from later, 60s at the earliest. You say the diamond magnas match; do you mean serialed? The shoulder looks more rounded than I‘d expect on an S-prefix, but that could just be optics.

The price is kinda subjective. I bought this and a Mod 39-2 in pretty good shape from a gentleman for $700. He wanted $450 for the 39 so maybe I did get it for $250.

That just about has to be an S prefix gun. And the stocks are newer - from the 1953-1967 period.

Could you post the complete serial number, or send it to me via PM?

Thanks.

Very likely pre- early 1948 given the barrel-shaped extractor rod knob and the long action. In which case the Magna stocks pictured are not of the type which would have been original to the gun.

Man you guys are sharp. It is a Pachmayr adapter, I never look at that close, it does date late 1948 high S876XXX and the grips are later. I took the old man at his word.

I show two in the "high" S876xxx range. One is S8766xx and shipped in February, 1947. Another at S8766xx shipped in April, 1947. I list others in the S876xxx to S877xxx range, but at present I don't have ship dates for them. But guns in the S880xxx to S887xxx were also shipping in April, 1947.

While possible, it doesn't seem likely yours shipped as late as "late 1948." The lowest number I show with a 1948 ship date is S9606xx, and it shipped in March, 1948.

I repeat my request. Please send me a PM with the complete serial number, and I'll see what I can find out. The features agree with an early to mid-year 1947 date (large knob, pressed stud, etc.).

I list S879xxx as shipping in 3/47. Very unlikely that S876xxx shipped in late 1948. The earliest S-series I see on my list having a 1948 shipment is S9613xx (1/48).

Yes. I list that one too. Sorry I missed it when I looked before.

There are also some in the S962xxx, S965xxx and S966xxx ranges that shipped in January, 1948. But a bunch with lower numbers shipped in December of the previous year.

Just goes to show, they were shipped in whatever order they were pulled from the vault. Most of those in that range that shipped in December had 2" barrels. So obviously, an order came in for the short barrel guns and they were pulled for shipment before their longer barreled brothers.

In the S961xxx range, were a bunch of 4" guns that went to the NYPD in March, 1948.
