Default Price Check on a Pre Model 29

Would you guys help me estimate a fair price for a pre-Model 29, with a 6-1/2-inch barrel, in blue, new and unfired in the correct black case with the correct tools? It is a 4 screw gun serial numbered S177XXX. A few photos are attached.

Thanks so much!

I am just going to chime in here and say $3500-$4000 and see if I am anywhere near the experts when they come along.

Is the the original finish or has this gun been re-worked? What does the other side and box w/ tools look like?

I have S172XXX which also is a four screw 6.5 inch blue gun. However, it shows a little wear and there is no box/tools. Even so I wouldn't expect to find it for sale for less than $1800. I think $3000- $3500 for your package is about right where I shop. Great gun!

The SCSW, 4th Ed. says $3750 for ANIB. So, give the banana to viceunit.

Thank you, sir! How far above that would you be willing to go if necessary?

Mine too, but I think I am going to make an offer on this revolver. Looks like PB&J for dinner for the next year.

Based on today's prices, $4500 is not out of the question. Regarding the accessories, the sight screwdriver is not original to this 44 Magnum, but dates to few years earlier. The correct sight screwdriver should have a knurled aluminum handle. The wire brush is also missing, but other than that, the overall package is a great example of a 4-screw 44 Magnum (many 44 Magnums in this serial number range shipped in 1958).

Thanks so much, Bill. The owner is asking $4,200. I realize this is totally subjective and hypothetical, but what might you think I might propose as a reasonable offer? I do not want to low-ball the seller. I have done business with him before and based on that experience I would have to say that the revolvers he sells are better than described. I do take note of your helpful comments about the accessories. Thanks again.

If you want a place to start, offer $3,700 (but, I don't think his asking price is unreasonable based on the condition of the 44 Magnum). Also, note the roll marking on the barrel is approximately one inch forward of normal. There was a batch of barrels stamped roll marked this way in error, but S&W used them as it did not affect the function or safety of the revolver. Some collectors find the condition collectible, some do not.

Default Flaw in the Grips

While the grips are beautiful, there is a flaw evident in the last photo, Pre 29 - 15. There is a chip missing at the very top of the right hand panel, just behind the trigger guard.

That should have some effect on value, yes?

Yea, it'll affect value a little, but use that to justify your lower offer. We have a couple of members here that can repair that to like new again.

I just purchased the above gun ^ last week. It's not as nice, the grips are wrong, and the accessories are missing. So the one pictured is clearly better, but you might use this sale price as leverage. Hope that's helpful.

If I had the "need" and had the funds, I would start at $3,600 with the hope the seller would meet me half way.
