The Heavy Duty Thread/ Undated with Letter 12/8/17 1st Post
I believe it's time for a Heavy Duty thread. Mines from the early 30's, waiting on letter for it. Let's see your Heavy Duty!
Update 12/8/17- received my Factory letter for this one and was surprised to see it was shipped to the City of Janesville, WI Police Dept. as a single unit shipment. As this one is all original with matching grips apparently it wasn't carried much.

Do your stocks number to the gun? If so, it would have to been born mid to late '30s, right?
Here's my only one from 1955-56.
(Hammer sorta looks like the Big Chicken...huh, Jeff?)

Hey Guy, yes, the stocks number to the gun, and your probably right about the date. I was going off some old info I received. I should be receiving a letter any day now for it. And it does look like a chicken head!

Shipped to the King County (WA) Sheriff's Department in April, 1935. At the time this group also covered the waterfront and city of Seattle. Badge and Peerless bracelets are 1930's. Stocks do not number to the gun. Front sight has been field modified.

Pretty sure mine dates from 1932. Someday I need to letter it. And get a better photo.

My only one
I bought this 5" 38/44 HD, in Florida, Ser. #3529x. The shop owner thought it was just another .38 Special. I bought it, had it papered, and found that it was shipped to Morley Brothers Co. in Saginaw MI,April 26, 1930, a year before I was born. Over the years it found it's way to Florida, where I bought it. It looks as though it wore rubber grips at one time, but, now wears stag grips. The stag grips show an untold story, that I'd love to know, there are eight hash marks sawed into the grips, five on the left grip, and three on the right grip. The side plate doesn't appear to have ever been removed, and it's trigger pull, is as smooth as any of the S&W revolvers that I own, some with outstanding custom trigger jobs. So it must have come directly from the S&W factory with that trigger work standard. It is one of my favorite S&W revolvers, that I own. Thanks for sharing.

With a serial number of just a little under 148000 I figure this one's mid-1950s.

Good grief folks, am I the only one with well worn HDs that have seen some service and look their age?
Well, here's my motley looking collection. The first one lettered as shipped in 1938 to El Paso, TX. I have the original service stocks but these fit my hand much better.
Second one is a transition model from 1946. This one is probably my favorite, if for no other reason than the DA trigger is smooth as glass. Not light, just smooth.
My last HD is Model of 1950, and the Serial # is S845XX. I think that puts it in '53 or '54, but I'm willing to be corrected. And no, these are not period stocks for this gun but they came with it and just looked Kool in the picture.

Dave,
I don't consider those three revolvers motley at all. They look as they should, after receiving normal, everyday use, in the line of duty. Nothing better could be said for a duty firearm, that's preformed it's duty.

Here's the only one I've had, so far. In a moment of weakness I sold it to a friend. I know dumb move, on my part. Per Mr. Jinks it shipped in 1939.
I have no idea who did the modifications or why they were done.

If you can get some close in pictures of that front sight I might be able to fill you in a little bit on who did it. Also, is the rear sight modified at all? I'm a big fan of HDs, and I do so love a nicely done sight upgrade.
I only have 2 HDs at the moment personally, would have a lot more if I could.

Very cool thread. I was not aware of a "HD" version from Smith. Before I clicked into the thread I was thinking of "Heavy Use" revolver use pics and such... Hmmmmm... Which is still a good idea for a pic thread. Heavy/Honest use and abused are two very different things. I use all my revolvers but I take very good care of them. I hate those abuse threads I see over on "other" forums...

Here's one shipped in November, 1955, just a couple weeks after I was born. Supposed to have been carried by LEO in Buffalo, Texas. Ft. Worth made holster is original to the gun. Stocks number to the gun.

Almost ashamed to show my ol' workhorse 4" HD from 1956. Most here are near-museum pieces.
It is extremely smooth.
