Help with another great-grandfather pistol
Similar story here: I inherited my great grandfathers 38.
5 screw
4 inch, barrel replaced ~1960
38 S&W Special CTG on barrel
S/N 352XXX
Fixed sights
I mainly just looking for approximate date of manufacture, but any information would be welcome. Thank you very much.

The serial would put the gun around 1920/21. The wooden stocks are the correct non-medallion style for that time, so they may be original. The serial may be penciled on the back of the right panel.
Since the barrel was replaced, a refinish of the whole gun is likely. It is in suspiciously good shape . And the logo looks buffed off partially.

The s/n and the stocks would put it in the 1920's as a Model of 1905 change 4, roundbutt. or an M&P handejector. The front sight makes sense if the barrel was replaced in 1960. The end of the extractor rod doesn't look like it came from the 1920's though. Maybe they replaced the cylinder as well.
The closest I have to yours s/n wise is 394728 and it shipped in 12/21.
Don't let the front sight on mine fool you; someone took a file to the half moon sight.
I also see that s/n 360812 shipped 12/20.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Does the gun have a star stamped on the butt next to the SN? If so, it went back to S&W for the work and there should be a MM.YY stamp when the work was done on the left side of the grip frame out near the toe. The polishing doesn't look like S&W factory to me, though. They would have had to replace the extractor rod with the barrel swap as there were likely no more barrels available that were milled for the mushroom shaped extractor knob.

The closest on my list to S/N 352xxx is 3535xx shipping in 9/20. The "Mushroom" extractor rod knob is correct for that time. The knurled rod tip on your M&P was not used by S&W until about 1947-48 (other than on 2" guns), so the extractor rod was replaced at the same time as the barrel. In the early 1950s, the barrel's front sight was changed to the ramped style as yours has. But the grips on yours are at least period-correct to the frame. Yours has definitely been refinished, not too surprising but probably not at the factory, given that the pin heads have been polished flat, and the S&W frame logo is very weak.

Thank you!
Y'all are amazing. I wish I had some others. The work was done by a local gunsmith in Dothan, Alabama. The logo was just bad photography. I attached another. Thank you again for the input!
