Default 38 M&P Postwar Pre-Model 10

The serial number puts it at 1948. I'd like some expert help to confirm or deny my id. It's rough, but I got my first snubbie. I should have mentioned, S958040.

Vintage plastic, of course not S&W.

Jack might be along with an accurate dating. I have an S961xxx shipped in December 1947, but I’m not sure whether the 2” barrels went out in the predictable sequence. The gun looks heavily used, I’d suspect it was a duty weapon, but no signs of real neglect that would detract from its solid charme. I’d probably get rid of the plastic and be looking for some beat-up sharp-shoulder magna stocks and maybe a Mershon or Tyler adaptor for a nice period package.

I have a Tyler that was on an older pistol and plan on trying that on it.

I concur with
Absalom's grip recommendation. Also , along with the usual cleaning, gentle Flitz , etc. I would obtain new side plate screws.

By my personal standards , with a revolver as worn as yours - very nice and desirable but worn - replacement screws clean up the cosmetics without committing any travesty. Marred screws do not fall under the general reference of "honest wear" , rather they are an indication of some past person using an inappropriate screwdriver.

Nice snub M&P , represents an unchecked item on my list.

There were apparently many snubbies sent out of the S&W factory during that time period. The closest SN on my list to S958040 is S95802x which shipped in 11/47. It's NOT a pre-Model 10 - a bit early for that designation. It's a post-WWII M&P snubby. These have somewhat more value and collector appeal than M&P snubbies made a year of so later. You should really get on eBay and look for a nice pair of period-correct sharp shoulder Magna grips.

There was a significant number of 2" square butt revolvers issued in the serial range from S956xxx to S960xxx. They are mixed in with a bunch of 5" examples. Nearly all that I've tracked down so far in that range moved out the door in November, 1947.

I do show two that left the factory in December, one of which is in my collection. These two are in the high S959xxx and very low S960xxx ranges.

Starting in the mid-S960xxx range, a large order of 4" guns was shipped to the New York Police Department in March, 1948. After that, I show no more snubs until the middle of the S962xxx range. Those are also square butt revolvers.

Having trouble finding correct screws, did get a new flat head you can't see. These are the first choice of grips, older than the pistol. Tight fitting, not quite the fit I want.

Nope, they're not

The diamonds around the screw didn't go away until about 1968, twenty years after your gun.

I have # S950824 a 2", which shipped Oct. 13, 1947 to Sports Inc. in Chicago.

Roy calls it a .38 Military & Police, Long Action Variation.

My long action post-war .38 snubby is #S936150. Roy says it shipped in September 1947. It's like new with number matching magnas. This will give you definite information as to what the magnas should be on the OP's revolver.

These are nice ones to have, and they don't show up all that often. There are many more in the C series.

That is a great little snubbie! Silvered in all the right places.

This is SN S951985 and it shipped 10/15/1947:

These little guys are a lot of fun.

This is S935954. Same batch as the one shown by CptCurl and also shipped in September, 1947. Stocks don't match.

I do have a collection of the "silvered" experienced ones as well as the safe queens. I'm still looking for that perfect correctly priced silvered M&P snub... When I find it, it will be polished up with a little Flitz, waxed with Ren Wax, spend a month at Nelson Ford's getting a trigger job and then moved into my shooting rotation.

Here's one of my HPs that fits that bill...

My M&P snubby looks pretty much like everyone else's, SN S9704xx, probably shipped 2/48 but unlettered.

I got diamond magnas for it and cleaned it up a lot. Shot several hundred rounds through it with my son recently; definitely MOP. In another forum I admitted to owning 20 S&Ws. I am so far behind on posting pictures and range reports, its not funny.

I've been searching for a 2" S series for some time now. Looks like they all may have found good homes.
