Default 1954 Highway Patrolman

I mentioned this one a week or so ago, and it was still around a few days later when I went back. Did a little haggling, and ended up with it on layaway.

Six inch, Highway Patrolman, from I'm told, 1954 (SN 117xxx). It looks like it's been well used, but mechanically it checks out.

The grips do number to the gun, but on the bottom they look like someone may have used them to tack up a wanted poster.

Good catch! They aren't makin' these anymore. My Mom bought mine for me in 1970 - serial is S322* - so I think it was made, maybe, in 69 or so. I shot it a lot in the 70's and haven't fired it since. Mine has quite a bit of flame-cutting above the B/C gap so it's been retired. I loaded a lot of hot 2400 loads back then ...

Looks like a great shooter, congrats.

Don't worry about the grip "dents" or finish wear, it's just par for the course of a working gun. I actually prefer revolvers have some wear character to them, showing they weren't babied and used like the quality tools they were.

They don't worry me a bit. I'm sort of tongue in cheek when I write these things, so I might make it sound like something bothers me.

I doubt I'll shoot it much. To be honest, I don't shoot anything too much anymore. I do like to rub them down while watching TV at night, and listen for the stories.

And if anyone asks, I'm likely to tell them the butt was used to tack up wanted posters.

You have to love the bargain Highway Patrol shooter with plenty of "character", especially a first year example. I have a close relative to yours...serial # 117785. I refer to it as "Bernie's gun" . It was evidently a present to Bernie (maybe retirement) as the engraving suggests. I got it for a bargain price due to the engraving. Otherwise it's a high condition gun.

Probably because they were meant to be used. Very nice gun. Enjoy it.

Those dent and dings may well be from a big deputy or patrolman “adjusting” the attitude of various miscreants!

Beautiful revolver. I would get some hot 158 grain rounds and take a nice buck with that beauty.

That's what my Dad did with his, now mine, HP. My Dad came face to face with a robber who thought he was a "Quick-Draw McGraw." My Dad was faster. According to my Dad's autobio, when he realized he was so much faster, instead of shooting the robber, he kept going with his HP and brought the butt of his gun under the other's chin and knocked him out. He couldn't do that now without a lawsuit.
