Default Letter carved inside grip

I own a S&W .38 M&P manufactured in 1904-05 that has an upside down letter F engraved on the inside of left rubber grip. Is this a significant code or just someones initial. Please advise. Thanks.

Probably something that was added by a previous owner. Does the right side panel have the gun's serial number on the inside?

I had a Model of 1905 that had "F.L. Jobes Christmas 1924" penciled on the inside of one of the grips. I called S&W to find out how old it was and they said judging from the s/n it left the factory in about 1919-1920.

Marking the inside of the grips may have been a popular way to mark your possessions back then to establish ownership in case it is stolen and recovered.

That definitely looks ”home-made”, and it appears whoever did this started scratching something else next to it, but didn’t finish.

PS: Or maybe it is complete and it’s a cattle brand or some other identifying symbol

Not unusual at all to find stuff there. I have several revolvers of different makes with former owners' names written inside the grip panels. Have also seen that on the inner sides of rifle and shotgun buttplates. I have a Swiss K31 carbine that had a piece of paper between the buttplate and the stock with a soldiers name, serial number(?), and his military group written on it. I left it in place.

Not only is the F upside down, it's backwards.

It's a cattle brand: for the "Broken Tine Pitchfork" ranch.

Well...my best guess anyway. Sorry, couldn't resist. But I've seen screwier brands.

Nice try. I thought it was the "Dead Giraffe" brand.

LOL. How'd you get a dead giraffe from that?

Well, I didn't really think it through, but I envisioned a long neck perpendicular to the body (rigor mortis?), giraffe lying on its back with hind legs and fore legs lying flat.

Long neck, lying on its back with feet in the air. Yep definitely dead giraffe killed by the broken tine pitchfork.
