Unique Registered Magnum **NEW Images**
Webster defines unique as "being the only one of it's kind, unlike anything else."
This Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum #49672/ Reg. No. 1672 is, by definition, unique. This four inch barreled revolver is the only known example of a documented factory engraved Registered Magnum. Additionally, this special ordered handgun was shipped by Smith & Wesson in the white to be engraved by R.J. Kornbrath. This Registered Magnum is fully and completely documented and next week I'll post more images of the revolver and the documents and tell the story.

It's already been said in so many words, but that right there is a class act!!
It is the second such class act I've seen----up close and personal, so to speak---although I was able to hold the other in my hands---both hands---as one might hold a new born baby---so as not to drop it.
It was also a Kornbrath piece---also full coverage----a .22 Outdoorsman---either the first or only one he ever did. (??) That which was most impressive---difficult to comprehend actually, were the artist's drawings for the work which accompanied the item. You had to wonder how ANYBODY could possibly sit down with nothing but a pen and paper, and create something like that----perfection personified.
We are in the company of greatness---a once in a lifetime happening. (Twice for me because I was in the right place at the right time----pure dumb luck.)

Rick:
...I'm sitting down...and I'm glad... What a BEAUTY. It combines two of my favorite S&W attributes - pre-war .357 Mag and engraved! Smiles a plenty from RKmesa.
Thanks so much for the photos. You have my address on where to send the gun! Making room in my safe as we speak...
Thanks for sharing - I'm looking forward to the rest of the story.

This looks to, quite possibly be, the same gun shown in Mr. McGivern’s book “Fast & Fancy Revolver Shooting”?

The Magnum posted by Rick is the same as shown in McGivern's book and is also featured in the book by Tim Mullins on the S&W .357 Magnum, p. 126. Not only is this Magnum unique in that it is engraved by Rudolph Kornbrath, but also has the rather scarce barrel length of four inches (Roy estimates 6.5 percent of the Magnums were shipped with this barrel length). Truly, a S&W collectors dream!!!

That I'm familiar with there were at least five factory engraved RM's, last time I checked four of them were documented as being done by Rudolph Kornbrath. Two of these were in Ray Cheely's collection and are now in other SWCA & Forum member collections. All are absolutely fantastic examples of Kornbrath's timeless work, this very cool gun included!!!

Smith & Wesson and Kornbrath apparently had a close relationship, when it came to customers wanting engraved S&Ws., as there were seven Model 1926 .44 Has, ordered by a customer in Texas through Wolf & Klar, and S&W shipped them all to Kornbrath, in the white, for engraving and return to S&W for nickel plating. Ed.

David,
As I understand it, the RM's referred to above were sent back to S&W for Kornbrath engraving. It may be a distinction without a difference or I could be wrong. It does raise an interesting question. If a gun was sent back to S&W for engraving, I assume it would have to be re-blued once the engraver returned the finished gun. Wouldn't the grip frame be marked accordingly? Additionally, wouldn't a RM originally ordered to be engraved have some paperwork associated with it?

The scratches on my guns don't look anything like that.
My dad was a slacker. No not really, Pops is the best.
Now I know what to wish for. Thanks for the pictures.

If I recall correctly, the movie Chinatown which took place in the 30's and had some basis in historical fact involved a chief engineer responsible for water acquisition and distribution. Wondering if there is any connection.

Rick, Is the order form shown above the only document available thru S&WHF? I'm curious if the invoice could be found showing the cost of Mr. Kornbrath's engraving. BEAUTIFUL GUN!!!!!!

The bad guy in Chinatown was named something like Mulray. A take off on Mullholand (??) who built that dam that busted and killed a lot of people. He was blamed for it but later a fault undetectable then was discovered there.

I have a packet coming from the S&WHF with 7 or 8 documents. The RM cost Mr. Howell $54.00, the engraving cost $100.00. Yhe RM was ordered on October 13th, made to order, sent to Kornbrath who engraved it and gold initials. Sent back to S&W for final polishing and finishing then sent to Mr. Howell on November 19... THIRTY-SEVEN days after the original order was placed. Now, is that service or WHAT!

The engraved RM's I referred to above we ordered engraved, Rick, and shipped to Kornbrath for the work to be done. There are a couple more I've either seen or bought/ sold, including an engraved/ gold-inlaid one, that were sent to Kornbrath at some point after their original shipments, and are documented as such.

If a gun was sent back to S&W for engraving, I assume it would have to be re-blued once the engraver returned the finished gun. Wouldn't the grip frame be marked accordingly? Additionally, wouldn't a RM originally ordered to be engraved have some paperwork associated with it?

Mr. Kornbrath had a devastating stroke in 1937 and could not work thereafter.
This is my Kornbrath -- Baker Elite from 1919.
It does not have the deep engraving for which Kornbrath was famous.
My Kornbrath is the everyday work of a Master Craftsman
That Registered Magnum is the work of a Master making a Masterpiece

Don't bother, I know fake news when I see/hear it.
That weapon is photo shopped and doesn't really exist. But the mouse artist was very good I'll admit...
