Very nice! I finally lucked into a 1950s Terrier a few months ago and I carry it quite a bit.
Congrats!

Sweet! I looked long and hard for a post-War real I-frame like yours, but finally had to settle for a pre-War version. They were and are S&W's smallest 38 ever and the flat spring action just feels right (to me at least.) Congratulations. Those extra stock panels are a nice find in and of themselves.

I list 5 Terriers having relatively nearby SNs, all of which shipped in the Sept to Nov 1950 period.

I bought a early with leaf spring Terrier last year from a Dealer here in Las Vegas that thought he had a Chief's Special and finally figured out it would not chamber 38 special. It lettered with service grips and it took a long time and many phones to get a set. As happy as I am with the gun I think finding the grips were the find of the show for me.

The grips that are on the gun are post-war. The grips you show that are off the gun are pre-war. Nice snag!

Are you using the cut at he bottom of grip to make determination or the checkering ?
Please help me see what you are seeing that leads you to that determination
The grips on the gun are not numbered
Thanks

The sharper corners of the checkering border is the main clue.

Won't one set or the other fit your frame best? If both fit equally well, you're a lucky man.

Yes DWalt has it. Pre-war grips have sharp corners on the gutter around the checkering. Post-war grips are rounded.

I got more time this afternoon and looked at grips on the gun and they do number to it. The other set has a number, hard to read but appears to be in 53000 serial number range, late pre war production?

Precisely, pre war production, notice the pre war flat silver medallions.
The medallions in the grips on the gun are post war nickeled medallions.
I have several examples in my data base, of post war I frames with pre war 'sharp cornered' service grips and flat silver medallions.
I also have post war I frames with pre war 'sharp cornered' service grips but nickeled post war medallions!
The first with Mini Magnas is # 62XXX. Except in the 56847 range on Terrier with Magnas, for the New York City P.D., September 1950.
Count the lines of checkering in a half inch X 2.
Pre war checkering of 16 cut lines per inch (15 rows of diamonds) replaced post war with 13 LPI (12 rows of diamonds) and round cornered checkering borders.

The PD contracts seem to have gotten the "new" stuff while the old Service round top grips were used up on the civilian market.

I mistyped the ship date after spending a full day walking Shot Show should be 1950 not 1970.
