1950 .45 Target Model (light Barrel) Pre-Model 26
I acquired this one today. I have to say it is a real beauty and my pictures do not do it justice. SN is S166850 and should place it in the 1956 to 1957 production period. It is the .45 ACP model.
The seller rated it in Excellent Condition, and I would have to concur.

It's far better than excellent, if for no other reason than it is NOT adorned with the funky finish. That MUST qualify for a premium of some sort.
In the for what it's worth department, #S79291 left the nest on March 27, 1951----with the funky finish.

Very, very nice! Hardly ever see them for sale locally. Here's the last one I saw for sale; SN S78490 which I haven't lettered but think is 1950 or 1951. Enjoy.

Good score lamarw. That's a beautiful example. I found this one a few months ago. It is in the S145,000 range and shipped 4/27/56. The original Magna stocks were missing and had been replaced with later incorrect type stocks. I was able to locate a set of non-relieved Target Stocks from about the right period. I have not fired it yet but plan on loading up some .45 Auto Rim cartridges and giving it a whirl.

These are great revolvers. You did well in getting it. I got one several years ago along with its box. They are finally being recognized as very collectable and great shooters.

Nice. It just looks better than my 1955. I have a "45 CAL MODEL 1955" just a few numbers earlier than the OPs gun. Mine is S165775, came with 3Ts but looks about the same other than that . The 1950's have just always looked better to me.

FWIW, mine is S 159461 and shipped in February of 1958. It is also a pre model.
PS: Sorry I wasn't paying attention and the gun above is a 1955. My 1950, is S 126189 and should have shipped in November of 1954 but is open on the books. Sorry, time for more coffee.

They do look alike from afar, but the 1955 has a much heavier barrel, and provides a much different shooting experience. I own both, but the pre-26 sees more trigger time than the pre-25. Two great guns with different personalities.

The Model of 1950 in .45 ACP is one of my favorite S&W models. In my safe is S96906, shipped July 1953. I don't get it out to the range nearly as often as I ought to.

I could never get my 1950 Target to shoot as good as my 1955. Not even close. Actually the only thing it seemed to like was 45 GAP ball.

You are going to love that revolver. Mine is serial# S146165 and left the factory July 2, 1958. It did letter with the target grips.

When I first enlisted I was a ship fitter. After about a year they combined ship fitters and damage control into one rate and became hull technicians.

These guns were conceived and built with the idea that Bullseye shooter were using 45 Ball, not 200gr LSWC. Some Model 1950s and 1955s shoot lead OK but many require ball ammo. This is not a flaw. Mine prefer ball.

I reload and have a good quanity of just about everthing to include 185 gr. FMJ, 200 gr. HP, 230 gr. lead and 230 gr. FMJ.
I guess the fun part will be determining which one it likes the best.

I totally agree -- this is a real beauty. I believe that S&W revolvers are "works of art". If I had the resources, e.g., $$$$, I would like to buy more S&W "works of art."

I agree, they are works of art. In my book, the everyday Model 10 is a simplistic and iconic work of art. They are even going up in value.

The Model 1950 Target .45 acp is the very best model that Smith and Wesson ever made !
The second best model ever is the Model 1955 Target .45 acp model.

Ok, you guys are gonna hate me for this one.
Just remember, i bought it as a $200 wreck that had a 1/4” wide offset front sight and wouldn’t ignite a primer in double action because some body “tuned” the gun for bullseye shooting.
We swapped parts until we got a decent DA hammer throw, and i have used the gun for years after the fix.
It is my ICORE L6 gun, and was probably the least tuned and most ancient gun at the 2016 IRC.

My contribution shown below. Model 1950, 45 ACP, SN S793xx. Duly noting also SNs S784xx & 792xx, ‘kissing cousins’, within this Thread and perhaps noted before!
Also, with a 1955 pretender/usual suspect (heavy barrel marked 1950). For me no comparison with the lightweight! Hands down the slim, trim 1950; ‘it’ in the ACP chambering.
That said and appreciating my 1950 shown as well as H/E counterpart…
Yet, heart with the 44 Spl in both Target & H/E flavors. From “New Century” through Forth Model into 24-3 early eighties era configurations, personal first-place winners!
Congrats on that new acquisition initiating this interesting Thread! Many beautiful classy/classic potential S&W centerfolds, loitering here! 😊

I still have mine I bought used for $230 in the mid 90's. Got it from pawn shop and it's likely source was from Phoenix Police auction that was only open to FFL's. Could have also come as a trade-in as the pawn shop had a revolver trade-in promotion on the hot selling at the time we called Wonder Nines.
Have no idea why but a few years later at the range one of the original grips lost a chunk off the bottom. By the time I discovered the missing piece it had been stepped on and disfigured. It now has grips I robbed off a 28-2. Grips look original but in my mind I know better.
Mine loves 200gr lead and especially shoots the home cast 225gr full wadcutter into tight groups both loads launched with 4.0 Bullseye. Both loads shoot equally well off of moon clips or Auto Rim brass.
It's a keeper and I won't let loose with it until my estate is divided. My gut still turns over thinking about the loss of the original target grips.

Your are right about not parting with it. The price you paid is closer to the price of a set of stocks in this day in age.
Watch eBay since from time to time there is a single stock on there. Could be like a finding a needle in a haystack.

What a find! One of my favorite S&Ws and calibers, especially with handloads in .45 A.R. cases.
I just picked up a pre-war commercial 1917 (not even close to the same condition, in fact it is a bit rough). In cleaning it I was reminded of how much better made *old* guns are than new.

You might be surprised as to the shipping date on your gun. I have two 1955 Targets, one in 45acp. Sn. S165024,shipped in Nov.1958, and the other in 45 Colt, Sn. S165547, shipped in June 1959. As you can see, they were on the shelf for a long time. Not as popular as S&W was hoping. Get a factory on your gun!

I took both the good and broken grip to EBay. Can't recall the numbers but I was really surprised what I got in an ego driven last few minutes bidding war.
