I recently aquired a K22 revolver. Afterwards, I started researcing the k22 and finding out about the different variants. By luck, I stopped at a gun store in Sioux Falls. They had a fixed sight 4 inch K22 (Model 45 ?). I know that these are rare. They were very busy that particular day. I could barely find a parking spot. I did not get a chance to inspect it like I wanted to. They were asking $925 for it. It looked like it was in pretty pristine condition. If I get back there anytime soon, I'm going to check it out. Not that I could afford it. When you come across a gun that is seldom seen, one shouldn't miss a chance to check it out. It would be like having the Mona Lisa be on display in your town and not going to see it, even if you aren't in to art.

If you are (or will ever be) in the market for a .22 M & P/model 45, you are unlikely to ever find one again in the condition described at $925. Ramen noodles and canned soup for the next few months will be good for you .

That is a huge bargain for such a rarity. It's one of those S&Ws very seldom seen as very few were sold on the commercial market (most, if not all, of those were sold by the H. H. Harris Co. in Chicago). Most made went to the Post Office for training, and allegedly all were destroyed when the PO no longer needed them. A few also went to several police departments for training service. There is little known about their history beyond that. A .22 M&P would probably have been a popular addition to S&W's line, but for some reason they chose not to catalog it.

Much like the .32 Long M&P. Not many of them were made, most of which were apparently sold on the foreign market never to return here, very seldom encountered, and no one knows much detail about their history.

This is the reason for the accumulation of "Mad Money". I always have a certain amount tucked away in my wallet. Then there is a credit card it that isn't enough. The currently more popular "Living Debt Free" and having emergency cash in the bank really pays off in the long run. And, as far as credit cards go, never charge more than you have cash in the bank to pay in full with when the bill comes.

You need to be interested in collecting US Post Office guns before making a $1000 purchase for a K22. PI have no interest in a K22 shipped to the US Post Office. I also have no interest in American Express guns, but some do and will pay whatever premium is charged. I have quite a few one of a kinds in my collection that are the only known S&W ever shipped to Fred Kxxx, or John Dxxx, or Robert Vxxx, etc, but I did not pay a premium for any of them. To me, a gun sent to the Post Office was just a standard purchase and worth little premium I could buy a beautiful mint condition K22 for $1000 and would rather do so, but there are collectors who would pay the price, don't know how many.

If you are simply buying the gun because of where it was sent, I would pass. If you are buying the gun for resale, I would worry about making a bundle on it, I would pass, but if you really need a US Post Office K22, go pay the money.

Google Maps shows about ten gun shops/pawn shops in the Sioux Falls area. Want to bet that someone here has already called all of them?

UPDATE: Sorry to make everyone salivate! I called the shop to confirm the model number. It is a Model 48. They did say that they had a Model 17 in the case. I did not see that one when I was in the other day. I did have one PM from someone interested in purchasing it. I was glad to share the info, but again, wrong model number.

Okay, now I'm confused. If you saw a fixed sight 4-inch K22 then it was a Model 45 (or pre 45). Maybe the gun shop doesn't know what they have, or the tag is written sloppy - sometimes a 5 can look like an 8.

If it was a fixed sight K-frame in .22, it must be a Model 45 or a pre-Model 45. It could be a Model 45-2. Apparently there were no Model 45-1s.

The Model 45 is a completely different critter from the K22 Masterpiece.
