Gun dates from 1955, plus or minus one year. Holster has an SD Meyers feel to me, but I am hardly an expert on that. I took a good look at one in the used-consignment shelf a few months ago not in nearly that nice a condition that they wanted $850 for, which I thought was way too much. I assume yours is as reblue but it is sure pretty. Congrats.

I have a 2" 5 screw square butt version (about 275000 numbers lower than yours). I've carried it on a few road trips but not many. Other than a few rounds at the range to be sure it shoots to point of aim, it's pretty much a safe queen. I think I like the round better than the sq butt, that one sure looks good. Mine is in similar condition, who ever had it before me must have used it about like I have.

Great looking Smith. I see no sign of a reblue, everything looks at it should.
What’s on the back of the holster?

Your revolver is a winner. I found a little older five screw in a pawn shop for a steal a couple of years ago, but alas, it has a Square butt.
Your holster is nice, but I have had several S. D. Meyers holsters and they were all stamped by the maker on the back side.
Best,
Jack

That is one nice Smith the holster ain't no slouch either. I do not see any signs of a reblue on it, just a well preserved example.

Congratulations on that find. Really nice looking. I keep looking for one like that, but all I've found, so far, are newer square butts.
Enjoy yours.

Very nice!
Normally I say I don't care for "snubbies" but I picked up one myself a week or so ago. A five screw, from the early 50's if I remember correctly. I tried to ignore it for a couple of weeks but it just stayed right there, as if waiting for me to take it with me. I finally did.
The pictures are around here somewhere if anyone is interested. It's not as nice as the OP's.

That's mighty fine. I have a slightly older one (C56439) that doesn't actually have a finish anymore, so it's nice to see what it used to look like. A round-butt K snubnose feels really great in the hand!

Great combination of revolver and holster from the good old days. You can't go wrong with either.

The frame on your gun dates to the 1955 (start 4-screw) to 1957 (start model number) era, but the barrel appears older. S&W switched from the half-penny front sight to a ramped front sight in 1952. The barrel and cylinder should have the same serial number as the frame. Does the number on the barrel flat under the extractor rod match the frame number? If not, it's been replaced. Still a very nice gun and holster. I've got one from 1948 that I shoot frequently.

There are no serial numbers on the Barrel flat or on the cylinder face.

That would suggest that both the barrel and cylinder are replacements (but not from another gun). I assume this revolver has no Model number stamped in the yoke cut since you referred to it as a pre-Model 10. S&W stopped stamping serial numbers on the cylinder and barrel in 1957, the same year that they started stamping Model numbers.
Another possibility is that this is a so-called "lunch box" gun, which refers to guns assembled from parts sneaked out of the factory and assembled at home by a dishonest employee. These don't appear in factory records. Getting a factory letter might help and would also tell you if the gun originally shipped with a 2 inch barrel.

I too wondered about the combination of front sight and screw configuration. If there is anything at all that I can see which might indicate reblue it would be the forward portion of the logo and PAT. OFF. lettering ; they seem shallow. The second "F" fades to almost nothing. On the other hand , the side plate seam looks very tight and original.
I dunno. What I do know is that I would be very pleased to have that lovely revolver in my safe.

Gun was just offered to me for sale. Owner left out all the pertinent info which I discovered reading the thread. Caveat emptor. I had questioned the barrel myself which wasn't mentioned but he obviously knew might be a problem. Its a dangerous world out there.

There is some bad data in this thread:

That is not correct.
The ramp became an option in 1952, not the standard. The half moon is actually offered on the 2 inch in the 1958 AMC.
See this post- http://smith-wessonforum.com/140884752-post10.html

That is incorrect also.
ONLY the very earliest 4 screw guns have all numbered parts like the 5 screw guns. Since batches of numbers have often appeared out of sequence, we really don't know when this gun shipped.

Most 4 screws did not have numbered barrels and cylinders, so they could well be original.
I see no indication of a reblue. Pull the grips and show us a pic of the left side of the grip frame, please.

Wow! That's rather harsh. The owner left out all the pertinent info, but directed you to a thread showing all that info???
What- was he hoping you couldn't read?

Bad Behavior
To all, I exhibited bad behavior in this matter with my post. I have contacted the original poster privately and let him know that. The problem here is all mine. I feel like an apology would be insulting to everyone so I'll just say that my rear-end overloaded my brain and I made several bad decisions. I have embarrassed myself and take responsibly for my actions. It won't happen again.

Two things I don't understand. The OP says he bought it yesterday (I know it's an old thread) and today he offered it to another member. Is he already unhappy with it or is he flipping guns? I would not advertise that in a public forum unless I had an FFL
Please tell me he didn't leave those huge target stocks on that snub. IMO that's a hideous look.
Really clean M&P and I see nothing wrong about it. Late for the round sight but they do appear until 1958 or so.

The original post was dated 3-25-2018.
The thread was resurrected by the person he recently offered it to.

That's a great little gun. Is the yoke numbered 7176?
Note the matte sides of the front sight blade. That did not start on half moons till they went from the satin blue to bright blue at the very end of the 5 screw period.

I for one much prefer the round butt and would not seek out nor buy a square butt 2" K frame .38 unless it was a heck of a buy and I could turn it over. I realize that some consider the square butt 2" to be the bee's knees , but in my mind, a 2" revolver is a handgun meant to be carried hidden and the square butt removes a lot of the concealability.
