Have a 22-40 box and want to sell it to a friend for his 22-40. Want to be fair on both ends. The top and sides are faded but the ends are good. Box itself is in good structural condition, all the metal corners are good. Please leave your opinion, it will be sold at the NE Ohio bunch in 2 weeks. I know a near perfect one would be worth roughly 1000.00. Thanks, Larry

Boy Larry this is a tough one.

I am thinking that box would cosmetically match a 22/40 in the 85 to 95ish% area. Likely around a $1700 to $2000ish gun.

Just guessing here I think maybe a buyer might want to be in it under 500 and hoping for 350 range.

If I had the appropriate gun I would be pushing hard for a trade that benefited both parties and softens the blow of buying old cardboard.

This is just an honest thought and should not be taken too serious. Its a really tough call.

There have been a few sold on the Forum and eBay that were in similar used condition and ranged from $400-600. That’s a pretty wide range... but I think $400 is basically the floor and given yours is intact with basically discoloration/fading I think $500 ish is reasonable. Nice color and clear picture/print and this jumps $600-800. Hope that helps as a guide, but there are obviously multiple factors that could increase the price. You have the supply, which is the hardest part.

Given the rarity factor, that's not an easy box to set a value on, and in the context of selling it to a friend, it makes matters even more complicated. For me, that wouldn't be an enviable position to be in. No way I know of to be fair to both. Personally, I try to steer clear of selling to friends and family.

I value my friends more than guns or boxes. If I had it, and he was a good friend, I would give the box to him as a gift. I have that kind of relationship with a good friend in Alabama. Big Larry

If I had a 90-94% second model and wanted a box, I would pay $550-600 for that one. My opinion is free and should be valued as such...

The 'wow' factor is greatly diminished on that one.

I would put it in the <80% category.

I would not put a better condition gun in that box.

I believe that $350.00 would be a max for me.

Chances are fairly good that I would leave that one on the table.

It would do very little to enhance the 'package' of most any K22/40 in 80% or better condition.

It would be about a $400 box to me, but I can see that others might go to $500-550.

Can you read any of the digits on the tape on the bottom of the box? Looks like the first digit or two could be missing, but we might be able to figure out the serial number of the gun that shipped in this box from what's left.

The preservation of this box makes it a perfect candidate for Ren Wax, it may slow down the burden of time on the surface becoming more brittle and susceptible to flaking and cracking. I use it on the few S&W boxes I have in the hopes they will be around longer than myself.

5 years ago I posted a WTT on the forum here for a 2nd Model Red Box, s/n: 693029, in very good condition. I received several trade offers in just a few days. I quickly settled on a good deal, receiving $750 in trade value for the box. Photo attached.

As I'm sure you know, there weren't many K-22 2nds made, and there's even fewer surviving boxes. It should make good "trade bait", and a trade deal can sometimes be more beneficial to both parties - especially between friends.

Your's certainly needs to be discounted some, due to the faded top. But, its in good structural condition, and may fit well with a 80-95% gun. I think $350 - 500 is not an unreasonable expectation.

My opinion is that asking that much for a box, any box is not friendly. Whatever the powers to be recommend as a fair price should be much less than any quotes you have received.
EXAMPLE: I found a Pre Model Box for the .44 Magnum and asked the forum members if they were the owner of this Revolver, had a positive response and sent it to the owner of the revolver for what it cost me plus shipping and I believe this would be a great policy and stop the price gauging taking advantage of our fellow members. But this is my personal opinion only! If you are collecting, accumulating anything S&W and are in it only for profit you could be an uncommitted S&W Collectors Member.

To me if I have the exact box or grips of someones gun I am more than happy to reunite them to the gun at cost.
Just seems like good karma.

Now a rare lone box or grips it gets a bit harder to know what to ask, hence this thread.

Considering that only a little over a thousand of this model were produced, I would guess that less than 500 boxes have survived. So if you are one of 300 million American's to own such a box, what would it be worth?

My first thought after reading the OP's post was that in new condition it's probably worth $1,000 and so in 75% condition probably worth $750.

After reading the other posts I am more inclined to think maybe more like $500 based on my learned colleagues opinions. I don't typically go after the high end boxes like RM's or .357 Magnums but know that they demand a large price. Due to the rarity of this type box, I would have to think that you won't find one for sale every day.

If it were my friend, I would tell him what collectors value the box and ask what price he had in mind. If he is thinking $25 or $50, this may just all be wasted band width.

These boxes are not all that 'scarce'. They actually pop up with some frequency.
Yes, they are well sought after.
Yes, they only made 1067 of the 2nd Model Masterpieces.
I think a pretty good percentage of those shipped were purchased by people with the means to do so above and beyond the normal twenty two of the day. So, I believe that the life of the gun was a nice one and the boxes experienced the same treatment.

I talked to Roy about the boxes and he asked me, "how many do you want?".

As we all know, Smith and Wesson geared up to sell their newly minted Masterpieces. Purchased brand new shiny red boxes to house the newly minted Masterpieces. Hell, even the first few guns shipped left the factory in Outdoorsman's boxes.

It seems that there exists a bundle/pallet, butt load of ready-to-make-up boxes. Who knows when they will be released to the masses. Roy shies away from the notion that a gun should be housed in anything other than it's original factory box. His words folks.

I believe that each and every item of interest in any collecting situation is at the discretion of the seller as far as pricing. There are many gives and takes to the whole realm of acquiring and the disposition of each.
I believe it is rather disingenuous to think that a seller must sell you something for what he paid for it to accommodate your current 'needs'. I have seen, more than once, someone just had to have what I had only to find out after I gave him a fair and just price he flipped it. Yes, I sold it to him. Yes, he owns it now. But, a certain level of good faith gets eroded away each time that happens.

If you have a market, sell.

My philosophy still falls in the category of condition. Stellar gun, needs stellar stocks, needs stellar box, and so on.

An under percentage of either of those three subtracts from, not adds too.

I have paid the price for a box. Some know that, most aren't aware. I will not buy a 70 percent box for any 95 percent gun.
