Check out this 1917 I got yesterday. Looks like somebody cut the barrel and moved sight.
2 numbers are on gun when you open cylinder there is 43243 and under barrel 166905 and looks like an eagle with s2 by each number.
questions:

Making sure it is a 1917.
What year would it be from.
Are they original sights and is everything else original
Anything else will be helpful.

Does the number on the barrel flat match the number on the back of the cylinder and on the butt of the frame?

The numbers inside the yoke are meaningless.
The serial number should be on the bottom of the grip frame along with U.S. Model of 1917.
It should also say "United States Property" on the under side of the barrel.
No, that is not an original front sight. That looks like some kind of aftermarket ramp or ribbed sight. The original is the half-moon style. Do a search for pics of 1917s. You should find plenty of originals to compare to.
It should also have a lanyard ring on the butt.
Those are nice looking older aftermarket target grips. The originals were smooth service style. Again, there should be plenty of pics if you google it.
The eagle and S2 are US proof marks, so yes, the frame was produced during WW1.
Note: If the serial number has been removed from the bottom of the grip frame, you have an illegal gun subject to confiscation and possible prosecution. Return it to the seller ASAP!

Looks like the frame was round butted kinda like a Colt , could be my imagination but that's what it looks like . I like it .

Those stocks look like Colts that were modified. I think it looks nice.

The sight is definitely a later addition and the barrel has been shortened. Since this is a military weapon that has been modified, it is no longer C&R eligible.

I like it - a LOT.
I was thinking the grips looked like they had been whittled out of a set of targets - partially based on the checkering being just a little uneven. they also look like there is still a little wood across the bottom of the grip frame covering up the serial number. I'm thinking that may also explain the slightly rounded corners of the grips.
The front sight base & rib looks like a one of a kind - maybe hand made.
Very unique and very cool looking.

You definitely want to see a serial number on the bottom of the grip frame. It doesn't necessarily have to match the 166905 on the barrel since a different barrel could have been fitted when the other mods were done.
