Estimated value of Prewar 38/44
I haven’t seen what these are bringing in today’s market. Any ideas? No box, just gun in 98%-99% condition, number matching grips in beautiful condition, original finish, letters as shipping to City of Janesville Police Dept., Wisconsin. Thanks for your help.

It must have sat in the Chief's desk drawer for the past 80 years.

I am sorry, but I can't answer your question. I can however tell you that is a BEAUTIFUL revolver. Love the 5" barrel. I have loved 38/44s since my grandfather gave me the one he carried (nickeled, postwar, transitional, 4") as a police officer for over 30 years. I have had it for almost that long now. It is by far the smoothest action of any S&W I have owned. I have never looked up the value, as I never plan on getting rid of it.

I am thinking in the $2000 range, but Bill (1Aspenhill) here on the Forum will give you the real answer.

That's a nice one - especially being it's a cop gun.
I'd say in the ballpark of $1,800 to $2,000 - depending on how bad somebody wanted it.

The first number that came to my mind was $2,000 but I don't follow prices on these. Not sure if one would need the original box to get that price or if the box would send it higher.
Regardless, that is one beautiful revolver and for 70+ years old I only hope that I look that good at 70. Since that's only a bit over two years away, that likelihood is looking rather slim.

I go to Janesville every Wednesday to shoot trap. If you will loan me the gun, I will see to it that it gets visiting privileges to Janesville.

When I think of Janesville, I think of Parker pens. Actually, a prominent person lives in the Parker house, but it might be deemed political if I said who.
But that revolver gives Janesville another claim to fame. Very nice gun!
Thanks for posting.

And when I think of Janesville, I think of the widest runway I've ever seen---and the embarrassment of not recognizing it as a runway.
I'm on my very first "cross country" flight with my instructor----destination Janesville. We're on a loooooooong straight in final approach. Everything says the runway is dead ahead---but I don't see it. My instructor asks, "Got the runway yet?" "Nope." This exchange was repeated several times----ending with "Nope.". Finally, he says, "See that great, huge, expanse of concrete up there?" "Yep---been seeing that for a long time." "That's the runway." And then he had a good laugh!! It all turned out all right---seems this was a favorite routine of his---and none of his students recognized the runway.
Now, as to the value: If I were to see that gun marked at $2,500-$3,000 (or a good bit more), I'd expect to see it snapped up in a heartbeat!! I'd also expect to see anybody who wanted to haggle about the price summarily dismissed---with prejudice! I think the only question about the REAL value is just exactly where and when do you expect to find another one like it---at any price?

The SCSW 4th edition places the value of a Pre-War Heavy Duty that it is excellent condition at $2200.00 for what that is worth.
Finding gun like that is hard to do - but finding a buyer with $2200.00 is just as hard these days.

That's always the problem with selling any valuable item. Finding a buyer who wants it and who has the disposable funds available to pay for it.

Two grand, maybe a little higher, but it's probably going to be a while before you could sell it.

Sixgun makes a good point----------it's going to be awhile before you can sell it----------at a high price. The remedy is two-fold: Sell it quickly at a depressed price---or hurry up and wait. ANYBODY who's selling ANYTHING, and is in a big steaming rush, is putting themselves at a severe disadvantage.
Why would you want to do that to yourself?
