S&W Mystery Box?
I picked up this box at the gun show held in Phoenix over last weekend As you can see it's in good shape but unfortunately the end label is all but gone. I am hoping someone can identify what model S&W was originally shipped in this box and the dates in use. The dimensions are: 7 1/4" x 3 3/4".

My guess would be one of the little I frame guns like the 32 HE's.

... or a J frame. Red boxes with a paper label like that were used for the Baby Chiefs.
Can you make out the serial number hand written on the bottom?

Is there no top line on the inside label stating what the gun is for the box? I cannot read the inside label. there were red kit gun boxes made in the 1950s.

There are some light pencil markings on the bottom of the box but they are way to faint to make out.
The label instructions on the L H side clearly indicate that they are for a Hand Ejector revolver but no specific model is indicated .The right side of the instructions are in Spanish.
For the heck of it; I placed a 40s model Hand Ejector in 32 long cartridge with a 2" barrel in the box and it's an excellent fit. Nothing with a barrel longer than 2" would fit.
Thanks for the responses so far.

Jim:
This is what went in it...
... I can hear my gun calling for that box... "come to me"... "come to me" ... "come to me"...
When I had the above little guy out for a photo shoot, I had to use a box for a different gun for a photo prop... I'm looking for a more permanent solution...
Thanks for sharing,

Often times with faded #s a photo is needed to “see” the penciled #s. Finding the serial number is made much easier using the Gimps Threshold tool.
If you can just determine the first number and total number of characters (5 or 6), I can tell you which model came in the box.
For examples:
A 5 digit # between 1 and 4XXXX is a Baby Chiefs
A 6 digit # between 5XXXXX and 6XXXXX is a .32 Hand Ejector
A 5 digit # between 5XXXX and 7XXXX is a .38 Terrier

One of my sons has a red box like yours that a early S&W "Kit" gun (M34) with 4" barrel, RB, blued came in.

Yes the Kit guns came in red boxes but there were no 2" barrels that would fit in a 7 1/4" box shipped before 1954. It would have to be an early "Model of 1953 new I frame" with a 3 or 4 digit serial #.

How about a 4 digit number 5438? I wiggled the box around under a strong light and that's what I make it out to be. I currently have a 32 hand ejector, circa late 40s, in the box and it fits perfectly.

Jim,
Of you're fairly certain it's only a 4 Digit Serial...Most likely originally shipped with a Pre-Model 34 Kit-Gun having a 2" Barrel in it!!

The 4 digits are large and there's not a lot of room before or after them for addl. numbers so I'm fairly certain that's it.

Well Jim, that wasn't so difficult.
As Masterpiece posted, #5438 would be a 22/32 Kit Gun; our "long shot came in". It probably had the lowest probability of being the one.
Shipped towards the end of 1954, the end label would be marked:
22/32 Kit Gun
Model of 1953
Blue 2" Barrel
