Default 32 HE 1st Mod 1896

i saw two of them this wknd. in well worn condition. Has anybody had or seen one in 99% condition? The few I have are well pocket worn with OK bores. Of the 19,712 that were made, I figured there had to be a few 99% guns out there.

Top-condition examples with the blued finish seem to be very rare. A lot of those I see are just brown patina. Nickeled ones in at least very good condition are somewhat more common.

I don’t do percentage guesses, but I’m reasonably happy with mine, shipped May 1900.

That is one nice darn lookin 96. It seems the nickel ones survived a lot better. Screws and plate seam look perfect. And the grips appear perfect. My blue ones are all **** compared to yours.

Higher condition examples of the model are really tough to find, doubly so for blued ones. Indeed, Mike the nickel guns survived much better.

Here's the best (only) one I have. One side is better than the other but it presents well. I don't believe it's ever been fired.

They are out there and still come up for sale from time to time. Prices used to be reasonable, but seem to be rising at auction in the last year.

Thanks Gary, I have a few blue ones left. What a neat little HE revolver.
No barrel rib roll marks. They made six different dies for the cylinder.
And the shape of the frame and top strap cylinder stop. Just neat and hard to find due to pocket carry popularity. That is a nice nickel trio you have.

Gary,

That's a gorgeous trio; all 5 screw and long hammer versions!

Yep, several unique features.

First model/first cartridge combinations are neat. I always thought the hammer lockout when cyl is open, built into the yoke (since there's no cyl release thumb piece) is clever as well.

Gary,

Thx for the photos. Similar to the 1913 vintage but pebble grained instead of the cloth finish of later boxes. Different message in the lid also.
