Default 44 HE 2nd model lanyard ring

When did they stop putting lanyard rings on 2nd model guns? I have #27377 and it does not have one, never did.

I checked the Search files and didn't come up with anything definitive. I have number 27668 it also does not have a provision for the lanyard ring. The 3rd edition bible mentions that "most but not all are issued with a lanyard ring." Lanyard rings are also found on 3rd models, that could push the date as far as just prior to entry into the second great war.

A lot of 2nd Model .44 Specials were built on 1917 frames that were already drilled for a lanyard loop.

My 5" 2nd .44 came with a plugged hole. I drilled out the plug and fitted a loop.

A good deal of the early production examples have a lanyard ring, regular and target configuration. I've seen a 1930's example with an original lanyard. I think it has more to do with the using up of older frames or an odd special order for a single gun or a small batch with the loops.

As Muley Gil and George posted, it's more a factor of the use of WWI surplus 1917 frames than anything else. The lanyard swivels were only standard equipment on military contract guns and some special ordered law enforcement contracts. We even see "unordered" swivels on the post war transitional 1917 45s and the 44s.

Any model can be ordered with a swivel option to this day including J frames (round ring).
