Default 2" 38 SPL

Bought this, thought to be Chief Special no model #, but don't know for sure. Picture now included. Serial # is on round butt 98557, assembly # under yoke 22939, assembly # on yoke 22939, assembly # on cover plate 22939, original stocks have Serial #98557 stamped on right side diamond checked, 2" barrel, 5 shot S&W 38 spl. flat latch release for yoke. no model # under yoke, just a G and a 3 with assembly # in-between with G on top and 3 on bottom. looks like a J steel (magnet sticks) mirror blue frame, three screw round butt 2" barrel. Everything seems to be original & shot very little. Any help with identifying & value of this pistol would be appreciated. ps. has a torsion type cylinder stop spring (old style). No numbers on cylinder (steel) or ejector star.

It’s a J frame from the mid to late 1950’s. A photo would help.

It sounds like a Chiefs Special (steel frame or Airweight), but your description could also fit a Bodyguard Airweight. Does it have a shrouded hammer?

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

Looking forward to seeing photos.

Most likely shipped Feb/Mar time frame 1957.

Well based on the revisions today I've edited my post:

It's a 38 Chiefs Special Model of 1953 New J frame in beautiful condition. It's from the 2nd quarter of 1957, just before it was assigned the Model 36.

The # on the butt, 98557, is the serial # on the grips so they're factory original.

It was built in a transition period where serial #s were reduced from 6 locations to only 3, finally ending up in ~1958 with the number on the butt, the right grip, and the front side of the extractor star* facing the cyl. With some exceptions such as still on the barrel or cyl.

*You won't see this one w/o cleaning and magnification!

Gorgeous, even if the stocks aren't original.

Thanks for the images.
