Hi, I’m a new member! Please bear with me as I learn the process of properly posting. I’m trying to find out possible year of manufacture of a Smith & Wesson 38 snubnose prewar model. I will be attaching a photo of the bottom of the butt where the serial number is stamped. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

You have a fairly early S&W Model of 1905 (ca. 1910) with a later 2" barrel. The factory did not make K-frame snubbies at that time. Plating would not be original but the grips may well be.

There should be a serial number under the barrel on the ejector Rod flat, on the cylinder face, and on the gun butt that you have pictured. These all should match for the gun to be original.

Are there any numbers stamped on the left side of the grip frame under the grips (like maybe 11.38)?

As Guy said, there should also be a matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel. If not (or if the number does not match the number on the butt), the barrel has been replaced. IMO...the gun has been refinished by someone other than the factory.

There are disagreements about the exact date of first K-frame 2" barreled snubby's production, but for sure it was in the 1930s. However, there have been many examples of earlier frames, such as yours, which have had the original longer barrel replaced by one in 2". Of necessity because 2" barrels were not made by S&W prior to the 1930s, the conversion had to have been done later than that. If there is no SN on the barrel flat, it probably would have been done by some gunsmith outside the factory, as S&W stamped a matching SN on the flat of a replaced barrel up until no earlier than the late 1950s. It is obvious that yours has a factory-made 2" barrel, not a shortened barrel of greater length.
