Hurt me, beat me, make me write bad checks!
I normally don't care for engraved revolvers, but this one just oozes old school style.
A beautiful gun!

Great 357 Magnum, Richard! Beautiful engraving. I would guess Harry Jarvis engraved that one. Love the scarce Blanchard front sight. As you mentioned, you don’t see too many revolvers with that feature.

RK, what can you tell us about the Blanchard Front Sight ? Was the Red Ramp that we are all familiar with a later option than the Blanchard and that was the first style available ?

I know what I know from Bill Cross and Mike Priwer and from letters from Roy. Here are their comments:

Letter from Roy (to Mike Priwer) on two other 1952 shipped, engraved, Blanchard sighted revolvers that now live with me - thank you Mike
" ...your handguns were shipped on Dec 12, 1952, and delivered to Rex Firearms, ... the revolvers were engraved as a pair and finished in the two-tone blue nickel that was a favorite of the Rex Firearms Co. ... Both the barrels are 3.5 inches and equipped with the Blanchard red insert front sight, that was only used in 1952 (catalog photo copy enclosed) target hammers and standard triggers. These revolvers are exceptionally fine examples of S&W Master Engraver Harry B. Jarvis work... "
Set of 1952 Engraved Pintos with the Blanchard Sight referred to in the letter excerpted above:

Absolutely!!! I have two sides to my collection, 1) the pristine mint ones and 2) the well-used shooters. Both of which I love to collect. Here is one of my favorite 357 shooters (I'm still looking for an affordable 3.5" pre 27 in this shape)...

Wow your " shooters " even are nice guns !I mean of course I love your engraved and pristine guns but one like that Highway Patrolman just sings "take me out to the shooting range take me out with a smile" ( sung to the tune of take me out to the ball game) .

Good information on the Blanchard history. It looks like just a simple change in dimensions of the mill cutter that made the dovetail for the red insert accomplished the same thing. Too bad Blanchard didn't get the honor of having the type of sight named after him like Call, Patridge or Baughmann did but maybe the royalty issue was contentious and Carl Hellstrom told him to take a hike.

My guess is Jarvis as well. I have not found any definitive marks, but the time period is right and the style is consistent enough with some of his other confirmed work. Although the work is relatively simple, I love the way that it covers the spaces, and yet still leaves some "open space" that is additive to the aesthetics of the pattern. Another cool feature is at the bottom of the back strap...
...I have never seen anything like this on any of my factory engraved 357s or any other factory engraved gun with a grooved back strap - have any of you?

I cannot recall having ever seen engraving towards the bottom of a grooved backstrap as on your gun. It is a nice touch.

Just one more "bonus photo" before this thread rides off into the sunset of "page 2" and older... Here she is with her younger sister - a March 1955 shipped, Class B engraved, nickel 357:
It is fun to see a couple of these shiny ones together. Note the difference in the front sight configuration - Blanchard insert on the bottom and the now standard insert on the top. Also, it's interesting to note the difference in "Class B" engraving coverage and complexity...
