Default 1903; 32 HE:Target

After selling most of my .32s at RIA, I stumbled across one of the guns that had been on my bucket list for many years....a 2nd Model (1903) Target. It was sitting in the used gun case at a local gun shop...looked awful, since no one had bothered cleaning up the gun. I could not resist, and the price was irresistible. I bought it, disassembled it, degreased and removed dried WD40, used Militec on all moving parts, minor adjustments, re-assembled and I had a swiss watch-like gem...Only blem was some rubbing on the barrel, likely holster negligence, but a touch here and there with some cold-blue brought back the color....it actually looks fine...A SHOOTER. Went to the range, set up a B2 target and the first 10 shots scored a 99....tight 2.5" group..
I Need is a NICER STOCK..(22/32 Target).this one is missing the proper screws and had a large chip that I repaired...they are the proper vintage with the brass emblem. If someone has a Maroon Box for a 6", let me know.

WOW!! I'd say that's a fine one, it "cleaned up" REAL good! I always enjoy your photography and creative layouts as well. I didn't bid on any this time, but a neat 4" 32 Target Lot#428 went for $1,035. I wish it was mine. Still don't have a 32 Target

Congratulations! I have one of the later ('20s vintage) examples and other than the fact that the front sight disappears in front of my old eyes. One other point... mine has Regulation Police-type grips, which I find more desirable by comparison. I don't know whether they were available as an option when yours was made, but they might be an option.

Terry, as I told you in private correspondence that is a very nice specimen. Congratulations on recognizing the diamond beneath the grime.

Froggie, I agree that the RP stocks are great for I-frame target revolvers, but they weren't available at the time Terry's revolver was assembled. The lowest RP (target or not) is numbered about 258000. From the photos you can see that Terry's target is numbered about 20,000 below that. His frame is not rebated for RP stocks, so it had to have shipped either with the standard round butt stocks or the two-screw extension stocks. I consider the latter more likely.

The lowest serial numbers I know for true RP Targets are in the 275xxx-276xxx range. All dated guns in that range were shipped in 1919. Terry's gun will have been one of the last .32 HE Second Model targets assembled, probably in 1916. After that it just sat in inventory for over a year until an order came in.

Just for fun....
Took it to a target shoot at my range....set up a B2 50ft target....
Shot a 99 in slow fire....first 4 in X-ring and I never touched the sights....

Dang Terry, that's a beauty! Shoots very well also.

I remember your description when you found it, you've turned it into a real prize!

Here's a good source for S&W screws:

GUN GARAGE on Ebay
gungarage | eBay Stores

Do you know the proper screw lengths for target grips?

I might be able to help with the grip situation. I'm curious if the frame is rebated? Given the serial number on the butt I would ponder if the gun had service grips or extension?

Looking at Terry's photo, the back strap is not rebated.
