Pre Model 17 with a SAT question
Good evening,
It has been awhile since I posted. I was contacted by my LGS on Thursday of last week and told that they had something I might be interested in. A Pre model 17 with the Box. I went and looked it over and agreed to buy it. I did not realize it had the SAT until I agreed to purchase it. It is a shooter but they just do not come up often like this. Nor do I want to discourage my LGS from contacting me when they get an older S&W that is complete from calling me.
The box is a little on the rough side with the bottom being to worn from sliding it on and off the shelf I suppose. So I cannot make out a wax pencil marking However it does have the original smith paper and tissue paper in the box. The SAT caught my attention though as I thought they came with a all black SAT. This is not all black but it does match my other SAT's that are all black in regards to knurling and nine rings. It also came with what I believe to be the original cleaning swab as well as the bore brush. (I am not sure about the cleaning rod)
I would rate the percentage between 92 to 95 percent but what a great package and they just do not come up that often. All numbers match on the revolver including the grips. The owner of the LGS told me the seller inherited it from his father who bought it new. I do believe this is a original set and I received it the way it was sold / manufactured sometime around 1957 if I am reading my S&W 4th edition correctly. S/N# K 31354.
Have any of you seen these shipped with a metal but not all black SAT in the past?
Thanks for letting me share BTW.
Stu

K31354 would date the gun to 1948.
You said the serial number is on the inside of the right stock panel. If it is the five digit number you provided, that is more evidence the gun is earlier than 1957. The style of Magna stocks shown in your picture were not used after early 1953.
And here's another factor: This revolver has five frame screws. The fifth screw went away in 1956.

And yes, that SAT could have shipped with a postwar revolver. How many knurled rings does it have, 8 or 9?

It's a nine row knurled, black oxide shaft, nickel over steel handle.
These are understood to have come about when the K22/40 2nd Model Masterpiece was introduced in 1940.
I suspect they had quite a stock of them as they didn't ship many pre war guns needing that new style SAT.

Good morning.
Thanks for the correction on the year.
I did notice that it was a five screw and must have not noticed that I was looking on the wrong page. I think it is intresting that all the parts survived through the years together with a revolver that was actually shot and not put away.

Is that the lighter weight barrel with narrow rib? If yes, that would also suggest an early post-War vintage. My 1948 vintage K-22 is of similar vintage, but shows it’s age to a much greater degree. Looking at the condition of yours, it would be very easy to mistake it for being much younger than it is. Congrats on a great find!

The steel sight screwdriver with a handle with a nickel finish could certainly be correct for your K-22. Since it was a give away item, S&W would have used what they had on hand when the revolver was shipped. The nox-rust paper is much too new for your K-22.

Based on other ship dates in the 30xxx range, yours should have shipped July/Aug 1948. They were shipping K22 as fast as they could get them out the door, so don't think yours hang around long.

When did S&W start using the 4 line address on the post war revolvers? Was it done across the entire line or one model at a time?

I have been a patron of their store for at least 20 years. I have asked several times to be contacted if a old Smith comes in as I don't have time to stop in on a regular basis.
I was glad to get both the call and revolver.
