"Veteran" Victory
Hi... Recently acquired this Victory in .38 S&W. She looks like there has been a lot of "clean up" performed but locks and shoots well; bore is fine. British marks on the frame are practically gone but some show on the bottom of the grip frame. ( Not sure what they indicate). Grips are stamped with matching serial number. I was wondering if the striations around the trigger guard are manufacturing marks or done during clean-up? Cheers

I think those are just production tool marks, although I haven’t seen them that obvious before.
The stampings on the butt are all factory stamps from the ordnance inspection, the G.H.D. and the “flaming bomb”. The finish is very worn, but appears original unless it’s a very old refinish.
It should have UNITED STATES PROPERTY on the top strap.

I'd call it a veteran rather than a beater. It's been thru a war and survived.

If the chambers have not been bored out to accept .38 Special cartridges, it is somewhat unusual even in that condition. It would be a strong candidate for a DIY refinish project. I cannot make out the butt SN that well, but it seems to be V182709 or V162709. In either case it is a BSR which probably shipped sometime in late 1942, maybe a bit later.

Refinishing that old war horse would be like putting a nylon jump suit and a purple toupee on a 90 year bald old WWI Veteran.

There's just something special about those old Smiths. I have a BSR from 1940. Seems like it almost speaks to me, and not just when I'm drinking.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
OP:
I would detail strip, clean, lube and shoot it. Nice find, especially with the cylinder not bored out.

Uniform of the Day for liberty in Longapo and Subic City. Best time you could have for $5 US.
