Hello to all, I have an older 38 special revolver passed down to me from an Uncle. Please see the three attached photos. The photos show the serial number. Number is 40409 with an N stamped above and the number 8 below. There is also a photo with the number stamped on the grip. Thanks for you assistance.
Welcome! This is a .38 Military & Police revolver. Smith & Wessons nearly always have the serial number stamped on the bottom of the grip frame (as in your photo #2 above) and this dates this one to about 1949. It has a fancy set of plastic stag-like stocks that are not original . Others will be along with more information. Enjoy!
Square frame stocks - magna style with diamonds - are on my all original 1950 M&P snubby. I would imagine it would be the same for yours, but others will correct me if I'm wrong. During this era, factory stocks were serial numbered to the guns.
Your gun is in a nickel plated finish, and I believe that's the "N" mark means. I don't own any nickel Smiths, so I'm not real familiar with them.
