Default My new 17 no dash and a couple questions

This sweet 17 no dash with the 3Ts is on its way to Kazoo and I知 not gonna lie, I知 pumped. Serial number is K428xxx which I believe is 1960, but I also believe the -1 came out in 1959. Can anyone confirm and if so, a transitional gun? Looking forward to shooting this one, a lot!

Not sure I would call it 'transitional', but there was overlap as older lots of frames were used up. The difference between the no dash and -1 was the change of thread direction on the extractor rod. With yours being a later SN, if you ever need to unscrew the rod, be careful! I once ruined an extractor in an I frame that I thought for sure would be right hand. It was left. :-( It's always possible the dash got left off, also. For reference, my very late pre-model number 4-screw is in the K200,000s.

IIRC the first 4 screw S&W revolvers were the Combat Magnum (pre 19) that began shipping in early 1956 in the K-260,000 range,

your serial is very near the end of the no dash run
For reference have these two in my collection that flank your serial
Model 19 Serial K 422034 Shipped May 1961
Model 15-1 Serial K 436822 Shipped June 1961

Enjoy

Hard to tell for sure from the pics, but the ejector on the OP's gun doesn't appear to have reduced diameter just behind the knurling that was used to indicate that a rod had left hand threads. A better pic of the knurled end of the rod would answer that question.

My bet is that it has right hand threads.

You sure have a right to be pumped up, she's a beauty. Just like I like them with full target accessories.
I'm going to have to search those gun shops in Kalamazoo, I've got a son attending Western.

Cool, I have a son just finishing up there also. The local gun shops can be a little disappointing. Nice older Smiths seem to disappear before making it to the retail counter at the largest one (On Target). This 17 is coming from Washington.

Congrats on the fine looking beauty there. These are very nice shooting guns. I recently acquired a similar gun and have the same questions. It is a mint condition Model 17 no dash. Made in 1957. It’s a 4 screw, 6” barrel with TTT and the target grips. Trigger is great.

I wonder how rare the Model 17 no-dash guns are relative to the 17-1 and pre Model 17 guns.

Yours is a real beauty. Here's my no dash (bought as a grad. present to myself in '71 for $60). It's a bit older than yours (1959). I've enjoyed it a lot. Sent it back to S&W several years ago for some new parts (hand, etc...) and a going over. They did a nice job.

Most the of 17-1's were in the 42X,XXX range. I have had two 426xxx and 428xxx. Didn't make many, only 9 months or so for all models. Most shipped in 1961.

Boy oh boy my uncle bought me a road map and circled Kakamazoo so I could prove to my buddies that I had been there and it was a real place .Still have the map and as you can see I still tell the story every chance I get. For pure shooting fun its hard to beat a K 22. Bounce tin cans, little rocks, busting dirt clots, targets, rabbits.Teach the kids, new shooters, getting your own trigger time in. Low cost ammo, no load noises or recoil.

Ha, that痴 awesome! To set the record straight, I知 a country boy and have never/would never live within the city limits. But I DO live in the very NW corner of Kalamazoo County! My new 17 no dash and a couple questions And I do get into Kazoo every now and then to visit some breweries!
