Default My Pre-27 - Shipping date?

I bought a 5" pre 27 in excellent shape last summer that was advertised as a 1954 gun (my birth year), however I fear it is a bit later than that. It's serial no is 1297XX. Can any body tell me its manufacturing and likely shipping date?

Thanks!
kas

I presume you left off the S prefix. 1955 for manufacturing. Someone else who tracks these will have to address shipping.

Thanks Guy.

Yes, it has an "S" prefix, which I forgot to add, as it is now wearing a somewhat ugly (don't like the color - look like chocolate milk) pair of Altamont fake N-frame Cokes that cover the butt of the gun. I am definitely more of a shooter than collector. However, I guess I would still like to know an approximate ship date. Anyone have a gun with a serial number close to mine that has a ship date?

Only the letter can provide a date with any certainty. My guess is middle of 1955. I see S129xxx shipped July of 1955.

Please make sure you add the entire serial number when asking for a history letter. We have had people send on requests with an x in the serial number.

Don gives great advise as he and Roy are the ones that research the shipping dates and prepare the historical letters. As a point of reference, S129604 and S129654 shipped in Jan 1955 and March 1955, respectively. However, both were special finish pintoed 357s and shipping dates on those is kind of all over the map.

To know for sure, fill out the form and order the letter. You may be surprised at what you discover.

Thanks fellas, for all the help!

I was born in December 1954, and I would love it if this gun was made around then, even if it was shipped sometime in 1955. I don't suppose the factory letters provide a manufacturing date as well as a ship date?

Thanks again,
kas

No, a factory letter will only give you a shipping date as well as the original configuration.

It's not possible to get a manufacturing date. There is no way to tell, as the serial number was assigned to a handgun in the final fitting phase of its time in the plant. However, it could sit in the vault for a number of years.
