I might (might) have scored on another poorly/incorrectly described auction.

Here is the description of the two firearm lot:

Item 1)
  • S&W Pre-Model 21 Revolver
    Manufactured circa 1923-24
    Model: 44 Hand Ejector
    Gauge: 44 mag
    Serial number S98758

Item 2)
  • S&W .38 Hand Ejector Revolver
    Manufactured circa 1946-47
    Model: 38 DA
    Gauge: 38 special
    Serial number S66110

Those descriptions make my eye twitch....so much fail.

The pictures and the serial numbers tell me that these two should be a 1950 Target made in 1953-54, and a .38/44 Heavy Duty post-war transition made in 1946-47.

The front sight base on the maybe-1950 looks a little wonky, but the barrel stampings appear to be correct for an original 4" barrel.

We'll find out for sure when they get here.....queue up the 'Anticipation' song from the old ketchup commercial.

I love poorly researched items up for sale.
The color on the Heavy Duty's trigger and hammer stands out well. I think you are going to spend some time digging some crud out of the action.
Well done, I would have bid too.

LOL...digging the crud out is always part of the first day home.

For azmick: I'm wondering if we've met. I'll be vague just in case you really do live where I think you do: if you drive north across the bridge, follow the road around the corner where the tall trees and the bee hives are, and then turn at the first left will you be headed for the place that sells hay?

They both look fine to me, especially the four inch 1950 44 Special. And if you got a great price due to the faulty definitions, so much the better. Enjoy.

Remember, Buffalo Bore makes a nice, hot load for that .38-44. I bet it'd kill a cougar, let alone a burglar.

More pix on arrival, I hope.

I'd be sorely tempted to carry both of those, if they look that good. I've experienced very little holster wear with good, lined holsters.

I'd be tempted to put Keith Brown stocks on both. Or, Pachmayr Presentation rubbers.

Nice catch! You're fishing in the right spots!! On the 1950 Target, the only way to know is with a letter. Barrel markings that look off center can letter as a 4" and perfectly centered on a 4" bbl can letter as a 6.5." Hope the 44mag guage is incorrect! With the front sight being "wonky" I would guess it was cut. The good thing with pinned front is you can remove them (with a proper fitting cup tip punch) and have the sight cleaned up and blued. If you do that, look in the barrel keyway and see if it is blued or in the white. That might be a good indication. Either way, it looks like a great gun and sounds like you got them at a great price. Transition guns can be rather pricey too.

I caught that one too. Almost bid on them myself. Glad that you ended up with them.

Oh yes, there will be pics. Close up shots of the crown and the front sight are in order.

It's interesting that the front sight base has lost the bluing from both sides almost evenly. Were the barrels blued with the front sights in place?

The hay place is west of the buffalo place a bit.
After you clean the crud out of the cylinder on the HD, check to see if it has been reamed for .357s. If both cylinders have been reamed for magnums, I would consider it a bonus.

Uh, I wouldn't shoot .44 Magnum in a converted .44 Special from that era. When S&W designed the .44 Magnum round in 1955, they started with the 1950 .44 Special revolver, but soon decided to heat treat them and use a heavy barrel. I don't consider that a safe conversion.
