Default It's a Heavy Barrel Combat!

Last month I posted my latest purchase, a .38 4" Kansas City PD Masterpiece:

The letter arrived with shipping info as I expected from an old Journal article:

In the SCSW, the 5" light barrel Missouri State Patrol is listed as a Combat Masterpiece, while the 4" KCPD and 5" Illinois State Police heavy barrels are classified as (Target) Masterpieces. However, Mr. Jinks uses a different criteria for the distinction, that being the Patridge v. Baughman (ramp) sight:

I think it's interesting that the KCPD, the first police agency to issue .357 Magnum revolvers switched form N frame guns to K frame guns. I wonder why the change, cost of the guns or the weight savings?

Anyhow the O/P has a really neat revolver.

You are very fortunate to have obtained the the 5" K-38. I was lucky to get a Model 14-2 Hanen/Dayton revolver about two years ago. I thought there would be little difference in the balance/handling between that and my Model 15-4 that I carried when I began my career in LE. I was wrong. The 14-2 is, for me, much more steady and recovers from recoil better.

I can only imagine what your 5" K-38 is like. I hope to obtain one of the 5" K-38's in the future.

Best of luck!
