Default 1917? Are these original grips? Value??

Fella is offering me a 1917 Brazil contract....asking $650.

Says gun is clean and works well.

The grips don't look original. How does that effect value? Is the price right? Also I'd like to see the right side of the gun, all he sent me were left side pics.

Here's one. Okay....two.

No, not original grips, Value wise they would devalue the gun for a collector. But it doesn't appear to be a collector grade gun.

For a shooter though, the original grips pretty much suck, so the post 1968 target grips can enhance the desirability if not the value.

I would think a Brazillion w/o original grips in that (good) condition, would be more like $550. Those 1970ish target grips do make it better for shooting.

I fall into the crowd that believes that ANY N frame S&W that is not a boat anchor is worth $500 all day long. In one photo the cylinder does not seem to be a match for the rest of the gun. Is it possible that the cylinder is numbered to a different revolver? That in addition to the non original stocks lowers the value IMHO.

Not sure what the Brazilian's are going for today in decent condition but they are hard to find in good shape. I don't think that I would pay $650 for that one.

The grips that are on it are not original, but probably worth more than its original grips. Reason I say that is because most original grips on Brazilians are usually pretty beat up. I have 2 sets of original Brazilian grips and I would trade either set for those targets, because of the condition, heavily worn checkering, bruises etc. A real nice set of original grips would be worth about $200 and I paid near that for a real nice set for my 1917 commercial, because although I had the 2 sets off a couple of Brazilians I picked up, neither did the gun any justice at all.

To me it would be the rare Brazilian that is worth $650. Often great shooters, but no prizes in the looks department. It wouldn't surprise me that the cylinder serial number does not match the gun. I have 2 with mismatched cylinders, both function well though. Because of this, I did a thread about Brazilian cylinder/frame mismatches a while back. Plenty of them had the correct numbers, but mismatches were not uncommon.

I would bet you could sell the stocks for $100+, if the other side looks as good as the side shown.

So is this Brazilian worth $550? More information / more pictures would help, but I would say unless the other side looks awful, it wouldn't be a bad deal, given that it functions as stated.

I'd want to inspect that gun thoroughly before I bought it...and $650 is too much as others have commented. I wonder why the seller didn't send you a picture of the other side...hmmm.

The original grips are like these and they are bringing a tidy sum in good condition. It is just a shooter and I'd keep what's on it for that...or replace the targets with some rubbers.
