Default Thread size for early K-frame grips

In trying to utilize a pair of pearl gold-medallion grips, I figured out what the thread size is. Its 5-44. Furthermore, there is a place here in Portland OR that has a large box of them. The proper head for these grip screws is the pfister head, and these screws have that head.

The screws are, primarily, 1 1/8" long, and the pfister head is also too large. I took me about 10 minutes to chuck one up in the drill press, work the head smaller with a file, shorten the length to 7/8", and clean up the thread on the end of the screw. These screws are threaded over their full length, and have never been used.

There is another box that has 1 3/8" long screws.

The screws are selling for $0.30 each. They might be a bit less if I bought more than the 10 that I did.

Let me know if anyone has an interest, and I'll buy them in a large bunch. The cost would be the price of the screws, plus shipping. Replies can be sent via pm here., or my email address: [email protected]

5-44 is correct, but they're a fillister head screw. Size 8 - 40 x 1" : BROWNELLS FILLISTER HEAD SCREW KIT | Brownells

Factory MOP grips only have the tip of the screw threaded like all S&W grip screws.

After market MOPs usually have a fully threaded screw with coarser thread.

Jim

Fillister is the word I wanted, not pfister! Thanks for the correction.

These particular pearl grips are factory, but the screw is long gone. Looked carefully at the Reno meeting, but only found one screw that was anywhere near correct. All the others are too long, probably made for magna stocks. Finding parts for 1899's is a real
problem.

Thats why I'm willing to spend the time to modify a 5-44 so that it fits right. I'm not worried about it being threaded along its entire length. Here are a couple pictures of the gun with the grips, and a couple close-up pictures of the grip panels.

Regards, Mike

Beautiful short barrel target and MOPs!

I kind'a figured that was probably spell checker "help" which usually isn't (LOL).

MOPs are so thin they likely had a unique screw even shorter than Service grip screws.

You're probably about the same distance from the RENO show as I am here in the central valley of CA.

The gun is my 3 1/2" 1899. Its a very good shooter. Here is the target that Jim Fisher shot with this gun, about 2 years ago.
