Default 1948 S&W K22 Pre-17 .22

I've been looking for a nice S&W .22 revolver for several years. Most have been either too expensive or too beat up for me. About a week ago, I found this S&W K22 (K188xx) on the big auction site for a just under $600. opening bid.

The photo's weren't that good, so I knew I was taking a chance (my first online auction purchase), but I bid anyway. I wound up being the only bidder and it just arrived today.

The cylinder was pretty gummed up and the whole gun was in need of a good cleaning. With just a basic cleaning (Hoppes, an old toothbrush and gun oil), it's now as smooth as butter. The blueing is outstanding with only a bit of wear at the muzzle end and a tiny (buggered) spot near the crane screw. Grips are serial number matched as well as other parts.

It took a while, but I think I finally found a keeper.

You just eliminated all alibis. If you miss with that one, everyone knows who's fault it is.

Enjoy it, it's a dandy.

That is the elusive "one line Made in USA address" only produced for a couple years after the war. Narrow rib and numbered sharp shoulder magnas are a plus, plus. Outstanding price in the real world. I'm with Iggy - misses can't be attributed to the gun.

Welcome to the club! It seems like there were a lot of returning servicemen after WW II who got in line to buy these K-22s right after the war, and now those of us in the next generation or two are becoming their owners/caretakers. Although mine probably came out a little later in the year than yours did, it’s still a 1948, and although it is considerably more finish worn, it’s still a favorite, and gets more range time than just about any gun I own. I hope you’ll enjoy yours as much as I do mine!

Here is the deal, as said above, they are addictive. I found my 1948 K22 a few years ago and it did not take long to add the 1948 K38 and I felt is was an absolute must and I would be happy . . . not so, they still keep multiplying.

. . . oh I almost forgot, you will need boxes and original tools for them as well.

That’s a beauty! My ‘47 has a set of Pointer Pups on it so I am in the hunt for a set of original grips to go along with it. Enjoy shooting it, as everyone else has said, you miss it’s not the gun. Absolute tack driver! Great grab!

One of mine is K 23233 and shipped in May of 1948. I would guess that yours is either from late April or May as well. The optimum words in that statement are "one of mine".

Be very careful because like rabbits, they tend to multiply when you are not looking (at least that's what I tell the wife)

That is a great find. One line address and high horn stocks. You did very well and that is definitely a keeper.

Thanks for the replies!

I currently own several S&W revolvers and have owned many others through the years, but feel like I joined a special club by owning this K22. I'm not sure if it's because of the incredible diversity that a quality S&W .22 revolver has to offer or simply the elegance of this still gorgeous, 70 year old beauty.

My wife insists it looks just like any of my other S&W revolvers and can't comprehend my excitement about owning it. The only response I could think of is the old saying, "If I have to explain it to you, you probably wouldn't understand". Shes hates it when I say that.

To my forum friends warning of an addiction to these classic gems, it's too late. I already have my eyes open for another. Possibly a model 18, but it will have to wait until my gun funds have replenished (or something comes along that I can't refuse).

Congrats from a fellow South Floridian

I was bitten by the K-22 bug a while ago and while filling the gaps of every change was fun it can be a bit time consuming and expensive :O

You have a nice cornerstone there as "One Liners" are not too common especially in the sub $600 range.

There is a post war version made just prior to yours AKA the LERK which stands for Large Ejector Rod Knob ,
lots of changes after that continue today .

Good luck and thanks for sharing

I have K2414 that was ordered by my father in law’s hunting buddy before he left the Navy and was waiting for him when he returned home. As far as excuses go, I think all of my S&W revolvers can shoot better than I can make them.
Great looking K-22 at a great price, thanks for posting it.
Regards,
turnerriver

A few months back I purchased a K22/40 from a forum member. Uncle Sam had me on an “extended vacation” in the sand at that time, so I had my lovely wife take care of the money part.

A few nights later her and I were on the phone, I asked her if she would like to know the significance of it...... she said “sure, go ahead and tell me about it, I’m gonna blow dry my hair”. pretty darn funny.

Nice 1 Liner! One......or 9 are never enough. Be careful.
