Default Help dating a K-22 Masterpiece

I have a K-22 with the 3 T's. I just picked up the 4th addition of the Standard Catalog of S&W.
The book states that they began stamping the model numbers in 1957. However in the back of the book in the serial number section page 489 for 1957 it doesn't give a serial number range, just says 'begin stamping of model numbers'.

This pistol has 3 in a circle, above a 'J' above an '8' stamped in the yoke area. No model number.

Serial number of this pistol is: K-328272. This serial is shown in the 1958 range in the book.

What year was it made?

I think you have it. You are right on the cusp of when they started model numbering. I don't think there was an exact date where the switchover took place. 1957 or 58.

Thanks for the info.
Is the book wrong about when they started stamping model numbers or did they really start around the end of '57 and sometime into '58?

Shipping dates and manufacturing dates do not often match. S&W did not waste much, so they would have used what was there, then started the new numbering system.

The management order to use model numbers was issued in about June, 1957. But it didn't take effect immediately and no model marked guns shipped until 1958; at least we've never found one that shipped before that. Lots of guns shipped in 1958 with no model number. The earliest model numbered gun I've ever located was a Model 29 that shipped in January, 1958.

If that is a K-22 and you got the date from Roy's list, I own that gun. It does not have a model number.

It is a forum on which SWCA members can request ship dates. Another one of many reasons to become a member of the SWCA.

According to the SCSW, 4th Ed., it was made in 1956.

That checks with my list also. But to get the actual ship date and destination would take a letter from the Historical Foundation.

Note: the number is high enough in the range of serials issued in 1956, that the ship date could have been in the following year pretty easily.
