Default Serial number analysis

The other day I came across an old Military & Police that was identified as a Model of 1905, 4th change. The serial number was straight numeric, but was followed by a star.

What did the star suffix symbolize?

The star symbolizes your revolver has been sent back to S&W for either a repair, refinish or both. If you look under the left side stock, you should find a numerical date code on the grip frame indicating the date of work at the factory.
