Tons of information about Victories on this forum if you search. Pictures help, as there are numerous possible variations, some not so good. SN V191874 would have shipped around late 1942-early 1943 and could be either a British service revolver (BSR, .38 S&W) or a U.S. version in .38 Special. Which is yours?

Tell us all the markings/stampings/numbers & letters on the gun and where they are, especially on the top strap and including the back side of the grips (if they are original ) and what stamps are on the grip frame under the grips. Is the lanyard swivel still attached ? Photos of all the above will help. Serial numbers in the range of your Victory mostly went to the US Navy, but may, or may not, be marked as Navy property. Value depends on condition. Ed.

You have the U. S. Navy Contract version. They went up to around SN V266xxx (mid-1943) with that topstrap stamp. They are not unusual or rare, but there will normally be a price premium for one with the Navy stamp. The Navy used them primarily for arming aviation flight crews. Most of the U. S. Military Victories in .38 Special went to the U. S. Navy, but not all of them have the U. S. Navy topstrap stamp. All had 4" barrels. P is a proof mark. There are a few U. S. Navy-stamped pre-Victories, i.e., without the V prefix to the serial number.

Yes, it could have been. The Navy-shipped Victorys were issued to Navy and Marine Corps aviators, and the Air Force ended up with them too; we’ve actually had plenty of eyewitness testimony here about the model still being on active service at the time of the Vietnam War, and even later for stateside guard duty at military bases and such.

Indeed, some Victories remained in service with all branches of the military at least through the Vietnam Era. I once had a former Marine "Tunnel Rat" who worked for me and he said he used one. I understand they were widely used by Army helicopter crews and to some extent by the USAF. I wouldn't be surprised if some found their way to the ARVN troops. I assume that most of the Victories in military storage were destroyed after the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam, as I have never heard of any surplus sales of them. You can pretty well bet that the great majority of the U.S. military Victories seen today were somehow liberated by their users.

One important purpose the Victories served in the Navy was their use by downed pilots, etc., as emergency signaling devices by using tracer bullets.

Thanks to all who gave me information on the Navy Victory model. I checked the SWHF historical grp. and $75.00 is what they want for a letter on their letter head. What do you think of that ?

A letter really won't provide much more information than you already have, except it will give you an exact shipping date if that is something important to you. It will tell you nothing about your gun that happened after it first left the factory other than it shipped to some Navy supply depot, etc. So do not expect a listing of its entire battle history. Your $75, your choice.
