Default M&P 1905 DOS help needed

Just purchased this 1905 4th change from an online auction. Seller was helping a friend liquidate her late husband's small firearm collection and didn't know much about guns.

Description states it is a 1930's firearm. Serial number is 658458, 6" barrel, original grips, not shot very much.

SCSW gave a very broad serial number date range 1915-1942. Would love to get a close DOS. Will be getting a letter in the near future. Took off the grips and absolutely no markings of any kind on either grip. No evidence on grip frame of ever going back to mothership for any reason. Not being that familiar with this era of revolvers not even sure if these are original or period correct grips. Serial number on butt, cylinder & barrel flat all match.

There is evidence of holster wear on both sides of barrel at muzzle and 2 small spots on top strap, left side. Bluing looks to be pretty good. Lock up is nice and tight. Paid in the neighborhood of $275 so I did OK.

Later 1930s, maybe 1936/37.

So the stocks can't be original, as around 1930 the silver-medallion stocks replaced this 1920s style.

The price was great in that condition.

I have a K22 with sn 659XXX and it chipped in December 1936, so yours was close. You have a very nice 38 M&P and you should be able to trade off those nice 1920s convex stocks for silver medallion stocks. Post a WTT on this forum. I recently was able to trade a 1910s set for a nice 1930s set that way.

Yep, those are the correct style from about 1930 to the end of 1941.

I was your competition bidding on that one. Looks like a very nice original gun that was shot very little. At least I am glad it went to a good home. You did well on it and I am interested in hearing a range report. Enjoy

"Took off the grips and absolutely no markings of any kind on either grip."

Not unusual for the 1920s grips. SNs were penciled, and often very difficult to make out - if you can see anything at all. They have value and shouldn't be thrown or given away.

Regarding SN 658458, I'd say 1936 is the most probable shipping year, but a year earlier or later is not out of the question. You did pretty good on the price.
