Man, you are on a roll! I have a King County (Seattle) HD from the 1930's. Finally found the correct badge for that one.

I would like to gather up some proper leather, patches and badges for each of my PD guns......I have the actual holster and ammo pouch for this WSP revolver.

Very nice! I have one of those where they ground off most of the ID from the backstrap. Enough remains to make out the WSP heritage though. They are fun to shoot!

This gun has the postwar hammer and short action. The article says it was being used in 1947.
Is that info consistent with when the guns in that mode were first made and shipped?
Or is this actually the gun in the trooper's hand? His has a lanyard ring. This one doesn't.

Thanks for posting. I learned something new from this. I never realized that the .38-44 cartridge was still in use by the mid 20th Century...especially among law enforcement agencies.

The photo in the article is of the patrolman who used to carry/own my revovler.
The firearm he is show shooting is one he may have been issued at the time the photo was taken, but is obviously not the one that I own. As you mentinoned, the gun in the photo has a lanyard ring.

Thought you might find this interesting. 44 HE from 1933 shipped to the WSP. Story is a high ranking government official, not a trooper, ended up with this before they recalled them for grinding of the stamp. OP, can you provide me with the journal # featuring the article on the 38/44?

Here are photos of the actual SWCA journal from 1987 that featured 38/44 HD's. At the time my friend David Damkaer was the editor of the journal.

Randy, is your King County HD marked on the backstrap or anywhere else?

This is why I love the old revolvers, and this thread is what makes this forum worthwhile for me.
Just as an aside, I had a Winchester Model 12 factory riot gun stamped Washington State Patrol on the receiver. Note the use of the past tense...I no longer have it (sigh).

The .38/44 cartridge was developed in 1930 as the .38 Special Hi Velocity. It is basically a .38 Special +P+ invented to penetrate car bodies and requiring, it was thought at the time, the .44 N frame and shrouded barrel to stand up to the higher pressure. It is not the same cartridge as the .38-44 target cartridge of the previous century.

I've got one of the WSP H-D's in the S148000's that shipped on Halloween 1955. It's had the markings removed from the back strap, and the cylinder has been reamed for .357's - but is in pretty good overall condition.
