Default civilian victory

Today I bought late vic SV 807726. it is a 4in 38sp with a factory civilian finish and never drilled for a lanyard loop, only external mark is the s on the sideplate. Gripframe marked F R on bottom r side and 7.46 on left heel. Does anyone have a similar gun? What stocks came on it? This one has 1/2 in thick stags! Info and comments desired.

7.46 is how the factory marked guns returned for service with the month & year.

Jay:

Assuming that your revolver has not been modified after leaving the factory, I suspect that upon very close examination under strong light and magnification you will find that the lanyard ring hole in the butt has been perfectly filled with a plug. These were finished at the factory so nicely that they are often overlooked.

The stocks would have been either left over prewar Magnas or the sharp-shouldered Magnas that were adopted immediately after the War.

From the Victory Model Database I can tell you that civilian guns in your range shipped in March, 1946.

Sounds like a neat gun. How about some pics?

Hi

SV807726 would have been a fairly early shipper. I show several 4" guns in that range that shipped in March, 1946. Two that have nearby serial numbers went to a distributor in Houston, Texas, on March 18, 1946. It is possible yours was in that shipment. Only a letter can tell you for sure.

All of the nearby guns had a plugged lanyard hole, so you should look closely for signs of that.

It is odd that your revolver went back to the Service Department only four months after it shipped, but it appears that it did.

Things did occasionally go wrong during manufacture that weren’t caught by QC. I have a Model 10-6 that shipped to NYPD in June 1968, and according to Robert Vivas’ records was returned to S&W in September, came back to NYPD in October and was finally sold to a recruit in January 1969. No date stamp to that effect, by the way.

Right. It does happen. No question about that.

What I meant by my "it is odd" statement was only that it is relatively uncommon. We don't see this crop up often.

Usually not. It is normally held in place by a small diameter transverse pin through the base of the grip frame. Look to see if a pin is there.

I have plugged vics and Ican see the outline but not this one. I CAN see transverse pin. S on SV is seemingly struck more lightly. I very much wish I could post pics of my finds but I don't know how. The computer doesn't have a camera. The finish on this is very nice and the DA trigger pull is sweet.

Are you actually seeing the transverse pin or the stock pin?
Can you take pics with your cell phone?

Like Ken says, if you can take pics with a smart phone, you can upload them to your computer, then to the forum, or directly to the forum using the app Tapatalk.
