With S&Ws, you will find ship dates, not manufacturing dates. Ship dates are what the BATF uses for Smith & Wesson revolvers. Approximate ship dates are below:

#1 - 1918-1919
#2 - 1928

Manufacturing dates are generally not available-----and we make do with shipping dates (which are available for yours with a (historical) letter).

In the meantime, sometimes reasonably accurate guesses can be made from this sort of thing---and perhaps more/closer from others.

#264678 shipped March 1, 1917

#354467 shipped November 16, 1920

#594161 shipped March 8, 1929

Thanks.
On my SN 581416 gun, the SN on the yoke & the frame where the yoke closes is 28349. Why the different #?

Because it isn't a serial number. Those numbers were used to keep parts together after the soft fitting process. The gun went to the finish shop (for example) in pieces. When it came back to the fitter, those numbers helped him make sure he was assembling a gun with the same parts he used during the soft fitting procedure. It might even end up with a different fitter when it returns to the fitting room. The "assembly" numbers were of extreme importance in quality control.

The same number will be stamped on the underside of the sideplate.
