Default .38/32 Terrier

I've finally added a third Pre-32 revolver to my small collection. Joining an I-frame with diamond, service grips and a J-frame with Magna diamond grips and flat thumb latch is an I-frame with diamond Magna grips in very good condition. As you can see in the thumbnail images, my new Terrier came with a box. It does number to the gun like the grips and I suspect this red box is not period correct (can anybody tell me?). It also had a S&W letter from Roy Jinks advising that it was shipped from Springfield on 3 Feb. 1953 to Sutcliffe Hardware in Louisville, Ky. As I'm from Louisville, that was really cool, plus I used to do a little business with Sutcliffe's back in the day. I put a of B.K. Grips T-grip adapter on it, like I do most of my Smith wheelguns; now to get it out and shoot it a little!

I have 2 red boxes one with red label and one with red label. 66971 shipped April 1952 has a red box , I believe that a red box would be correct for yours.

Look on the bottom of the box. The number might be there but hard to see.

Bill,

That's a beauty! It's a .38 Terrier Improved I frame (coil mainspring), 1st version with rd sight, a 5 screw; a bit early to be a Pre Model 32.

Your Terrier at the top is a Model of 1953 NEW I frame (larger trigger guard and 1/8" longer grip frame). Is it a 4 screw or the later 3 screw? It's a Pre 32, because its engineering design is the same as the Model 32 which is still a New I frame. The Model 32-1 is the J Frame introduced Jan 1961.

Your bottom Terrier is the earliest of the three, and likely a 32 Terrier Post War Transitional Model 6 screw if it has a leaf hammer spring.

Now you just need the Improved I frame, 2nd version with barrel rib and ramp sight like your top Terrier to have the four versions from that period. There's 6 versions all together including the 32-1 J frame.

Notice all three have a different style thumb latch. That's three of the seven different latches from the '50s.

That one earns its keep.

Likely shipped mid 1954.

Default Terrier

Thanks Jim, that's good information to have. I may try and get most/all of the variations eventually.

My oldest Terrier is a 5-screw with a coil spring, #61057. My recently acquired Terrier is a 5-screw, #67571. My most modern Terrier is a 4-screw, #78327. Thought I'd give you the serial numbers in case you keep a data-base.

Sadly, I don't look at the Forum very often, I need to find more time to check it and post things!

Bill
