Is it worth it?
I am on Vacation out of state. Is this K38 Target Masterpiece worth $625. Cell phone pictures are best I can do? Thank y’all very much in advance. Any extra information would be appreciated also.

Hi
From what I can see in the pics, at six and a half it doesn't seem overpriced. The serial number is from fairly early 1958 - I assume it doesn't have a model number in the yoke cut.
If I needed a four screw from just before model numbers (I don't), I believe I would snap that one up.
Good luck.

I’d say that’s a pretty good price these days. Will they ship it for you?

It's a reasonable price. $500 would be a great price. $600+ is starting to get to the higher end of the price range. The gun looks like it's in average condition. I'd offer $600, but $625 isn't bad if that's were you end up.
It'd be possible to find one in better condition or cheaper but it'd take a moderate amount of searching to find one in better condition and cheaper.

I'd buy it. I bought a 14-4 for $500 last week. It's only money.

I can’t afford it but if I could I’d buy it! Break out the plastic! Life is short! Enjoy it while you can.

Just FYI, asking those here about buying another S&W is like asking an alcoholic if he wants another beer.

...transitional model might make it worth a little more to some buyers...
...good looking revolver...
...hard to go wrong with a K frame target model...

I am wondering what you can possibly find wrong with the gun to call it average condition. I see a gun in near 100% original finish without even any muzzle wear and only a few marks from handling. Stocks look almost perfect. The biggest problem is that it is not an early post-war gun, but still 60 years old so qualifies as a C&R. I think the money is right for a pre-model K38 Masterpiece.

Okay. I give up. What is "transitional" about it?

Paid $500 and change for mine, similar condition, just prior to the model numbers several years ago. I'd go for it. A great piece!

Price looks right. I'd like to see images of forcing cone and ratchet. Look for cylinder side play when cycling through the action. The turn line looks such that this may have been very little fired. Mostly rash from sitting amongst other guns in the safe and dinging up a bit. Like they said: Offer 600. Early serial number makes it much more attractive.

The Colt (M1917?) under it looks far more interesting than the K38.
The closest K38 SN I have listed is K3204xx which shipped in 2/59.

You like it? You want it? Then buy it. Who cares what strangers on the Internet think?

I suppose I'm too picky about words, but there really is no transition at that point. One day a particular model had no number stamped in the yoke cut, the next day it did (sort of). No change to the gun at all.
Some have said there was a change in metallurgy at that time, on all or most of the models. So far as I have been able to determine, only the magnum guns (Combat Magnum and .44 Magnum particularly) got some added (or modified) heat treatment, but that wasn't related to the model stamping, just close in time.
So, yes, there was a phase-in of model stamping, with some models getting the numbers sooner than others. Also, within a model line, some guns with lower serial numbers than others got stamped, while others with higher numbers still were not stamped with the model number. But I see that as a phase-in of the new practice. There isn't any transition in parts, which is usually how we collectors use that term. (For example, in 1948 there was a "transition" from the long action to the High Speed hammer. Shortly before that, things like the extractor rod, hammer pivot stud, shape of the thumb piece, etc., changed. But those minor changes don't constitute a transition.)
Anyway, there is my two Yen worth of thoughts.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. The gun should get to my FFL about the same time I get Home from vacation. Just in time for me to go back to work.

Plenty of scuffs marks on he barrel. It looks like it was wearing larger grips at some point and they left a line across both the side plate and left side of the frame. The frame around the 4 line address has wear. The grip frame has scuff marks. None of the marks are substantial. Average condition probably isn't correct but it's a long ways off 100% in my book.
