Default Question on Pre-28 Highway Patrolman

I picked this up today at a local gun show, and believe it is a pre-28, Serial is S1290XX. It is a 5 screw and has the early style target grips with no relief cutout. The serial is the same on the frame, barrel, cylinder, and inside of the extractor star. Is there someone here that can tell me what year it was made?

That's a nice one. Made 1956-7, and shipped likely not too long after that.

Mine is S 127xxx, and based on reading what here on some lettered guns, and other internet resources, I have mine figured as a late 1954, maybe.

Nice HP! The stocks are worth a nice chunk of change on their own. Check the front sight screw. It looks loose.

S129xxx fits nicely within the 1954-55 serial range. The upper sideplate screw would also tend to indicate production before about May or June, 1956.

Nice HP's on this thread so far! Here is my 4" version, made in 1955, which I obtained last June at a gun show in Louisville. Has some honest wear to it.

I am wondering if these stocks are from an earlier gun. Anybody know when they quit making the non-relieved target stocks?

According to what I've read, the non-relieved targets were offrered as an option from 1952 to 58. My HP has the same wood.
Nice gun.

Mine, # S 120632 came with the non-relieved stocks and in a deep box numbered to the gun, indicating it shipped with target stocks.

I think late 1954 or early 1955. Those stocks would be period correct. Most likely not original to the gun. Maybe dealer installed at the point of purchase or added later.

But bear in mind I am no expert and don't claim to be one...

Beautiful piece! I picked up one earlier this year with non relieved diamond targets that numbered to the gun.

Enjoy!

Lucky. Target stocks are very rarely numbered.

I love seeing early HP's. Mine has a fairly low SN at S111760, shipped June, 1954. What makes it interesting to me is that it was shipped to Evaluators Ltd. in Quantico, VA. I keep it under glass as I have a S prefix 28-2 by the front door.

OK, how about a picture.

The 5 screw is obviously the pre-28 HP.

Your HP dates to late 1954 or early 1955 (per the serial number). Target stocks were an extra cost option for this model ($89.50 with TS, $85.60 with Magna stocks) and could be original to your revolver. A history letter authenticating its manufacturing is the only way to know for certain.

Nice looking 6" HP.

Mine's S121610 and shipped in March '56. Many here believed it would have been a late '54 shipper, but Roy knows better.
