Would $850 be an OK price for a clean refinished 6 1/2" pre war Outdoorsman?? It looks like a solid shooter grade revolver. I didn't have the ability to take pics.....

Do you see any signs that it's a factory re-finish such as a star stamped next to the S/N or a date stamp on the side of the grip frame??

Is this the .22 or the .38 OD? If it's the .38/44, buy it now. If it's the .22, that's probably an OK price, but maybe there's a little negotiating room.

ADDED: Sorry, the barrel length failed to register. Obviously we're talking about the N-frame OD.

It depends on the origin and quality of the refinish. The .22 was a 6" so I presume you are referring to the .38/44. If a factory reblue with original stocks and in good condition mechanically, I think $850 would be at the upper limit of current values.

Some times folks worry about overpaying by a small amount. How do you put a $$ value on enjoying something you want? If you want it and can afford it, buy it.

It is the .38/44 Outdoorsman. There is no rework star. I have a pre war .22 OD that needs a big brother. Let me go check on it. Be back with pics.

It looks decent, with the typical "barrel and cylinder look different from the frame" bluing of a refinish.

What I do when trying to establish a value of a refinished gun is compare it to what a non-refinished version is going for and then knock off some for the refinish. A small amount if done at the factory and maybe twice that amount if done outside the factory. Of course if it was done at Bubba's Bumper Shop and Laundromat then the deduction can be a bit more and/or reach the walk away threshold.

The gun you show looks pretty nice from a distance and will probably make an excellent shooter. IMHO any non boat anchor N frame S&W is worth $500 all day long. Condition and actual model can up that number based on rarity/demand.

Again, my opinions and worth exactly what you paid for them.

It's a little hard to tell from the photo but if the stocks are in good condition
they would be worth upwards of 300 by themselves. I know I would be willing to pay that for a set in good condition with a low ser. #.

This makes perfect sense to me. I bought it tonight. I decided not to lose it over the $75 difference between opening and BIN.

So what possible difference in the value of a pair of grips is made by a low serial number?

It's never happened, but if you offer me a pair of grips numbered to my gun, I'm going to sit up and take notice!! Otherwise----------------------------------

And speaking of grips and numbers, I have a pair of pre-war Magna's (N frame---early). They are essentially as new. They are numbered to 52426. Anybody got that? Want your grips?

The pictures are quite small to tell for certain but possibly only the cylinder was re-blued. If that turns out to be the case the cylinder could be very much improved on and not be so noticeable.

The rebound slide pin is flat----should be rounded---domed. (Translation: The frame's been up against a polishing wheel since it left Springfield.)

Perhaps I should have been more clear in my statement. I have a 3rd model .44 Ser# 38402 that would have come with that style of stocks I've been looking for a pair for a couple of years.
If I could find a pair in good condition close to that "low Ser#"
I would be happy to pay 300, so my post was more about a personal choice then the price of stocks in general.

Heck, my thought is that $75 is the cost of taking the wife out for dinner one night. Not only will the $75 go towards something that will continue to appreciate in value but think of the calories saved! :-)
