Default Model 38 no dash in nickel,Tyler grips

I was in the gun shop today to arrange for a transfer. I asked do you have any older Smith revolvers. He said I have a 642 over on the other side. So I walked around to him. As I rounded the corner I saw him pull out an very shiny shrouded revolver. I have a 642 and it is not shiny. Not one bit. So I took it and opened it up. Mod-38. I'm not all that smart but I can read. I told them it was a Mod-38. It had magnas with a tyler grip, it is in Nickel. Is this something I should be interested in.

As I left the shop I could hear them talking about it. Yep one of them said to the other. I don't think this is a Mod 642. I think it is mismarked. He didn't sound very sure. I hope he was talking about the tag not the gun.

No, you should have no interest in that M 38!!

Terrible, awful gun.

By the way, what’s the contact info for the gun shop?

...if it's in decent shape...I'd be interested...

...you'd think it would be helpful if you own a gun shop to know the difference between a model 38..and a 642...

I'm pretty sure it was the 2 inch but I may go back and look again. I know, I know, I should have taken a picture.

Can anyone give me a ball park value. It looks pretty good but it was dirty. There was a bit of grime in the hammer serrations.

I bought an excellent condition nickel Model 38 no dash about a year ago for $300. Thought I got a bargain. Sweet little J frame. I haven't seen one for sale since.
