How many Registered Magnum certificate guns are recorded
Hi Forum members,
Been a while. I just picked up a Register Magnum. When I get the gun I will take pictures and post. This one is complete for the most part (tube, cert, numbered box to gun, lettered). I made a point years go when I first started collecting by focusing on only RM revolvers with certs. As I understand out of the 5000 or so Registered Magnum manufactured only 3500 were available for a cert before SW stopped the practice. The remaining 1500 are known to the best of my knowledge as non-registered registered magnums. Try saying that 10 times!! My question - do we collectively know how many guns actually exist today with real period correct certs?

Sorry I don't know either, but congratulations on your purchase!
I must say, I like your style sir... 'I don't often buy Registered Magnums, but when I do, I prefer they have certificates.'

This is probably a good time to remind Forum members that not all RMs , with certificates, have genuine certificates. There are fake certs out there that can fool you. (Watermarks on the paper, is one clue ). The late Ray Cheely gave a talk on these fakes at an annual meeting many years ago, and handed out a brochure on how to spot a fake cert. I probably have a copy somewhere in my files, but where? Ed.

S&W's records suggest at least 5000 .357 Magnums were available with certificates before the practice was discontinued in 1939. I have no idea how many certificates were actually requested. I think there are around 65-70 Magnums known with certificates in the hands of collectors.

Ed,
If you ever find that brochure, can you post it or summarize the contents? Probably best to post in a separate thread.
Thank you in advance.

I think forum member kwill has a current database on known RM certs.
If someone else is starting one,-- I have an example for the list, RM # 4723

Certificates??? WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' CERTIFICATES!!!.
We're just lucky to have found an RM that we could afford.
Congrats on a fine acquisition.

Bill- how did you arrive at that number? I think last year someone estimated 150-200 when I posted about RM 2787. Dave

I have recorded just over 90 certificates but 2-3 of these are without the gun.
