Which gun to "letter"?
I have four letter request forms filled out in front of me and thought it might be fun to get some input from the forum as to which to drop into the mail today.
1) Heavy Duty .38/44 S-72xxx, A lot of carry wear. Could be a police service revolver.
2) Outdoorsman .38/44 48xxx, refinished. Aways a chance of some interesting history with these.....
3) Outdoorsman .22 661xxx, Nice condition with original finish.
4) M&P 1905 Target 150xxx marked with a rework star. Went back to S&W in 12/26 according to the stamping under the stocks. Refinished. Aftermarket etched with a Chicago PD Lieutenant's name on the sideplate as was the tradition with that agency.
Which on shall it be????
What say you??

I'd double up, both Outdoorsman's together, then the other two when those come back.

Join the S&WCA, ask Roy for the ship dates and if he says any one of them is "interesting" letter that one. I've gathered chances are slim for Roy to say that, but if you're really considering letting all four the fee would be $10 less per letter as a member -- that alone pays for two-thirds of the membership.
Don't you just hate folks who won't give you a direct answer to a direct question?
Cheers

The earliest guns have the most chance to come back as shipping to an individual and especially a target model 1905 which is the likeliest of being a special order.
And I agree, join the S&WCA.

If you must choose, I’d also go with the Target M&P. It already has two things going for it that set it apart:
As Jim says, you already know that probability-wise it has the best chance of being an individual order. And you have the name on it. So even if that name isn’t on the order (and thus the letter), showing it shipped to maybe a known Chicago police supplier would round out the package.

First, Join the S&WCA and get the ship dates as suggested above, Second, the target 1905, check for the gun's serial number under the rear sight base. If it's not there, then the return to the factory may have included a conversion from service sights to target sights, and the gun won't letter as shipped as a target model. Third , letter the two ODs, as a letter will add more to their value than the $65 cost of the letter. I wouldn't bother about the 38/44 as it's an S serial number and will post likely go to a distributor. Ed.

I'll give you a direct answer to a direct question!!
I letter all my guns----NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
Why? Because you don't know until you get the letter back.
One letter came back telling me the gun had shipped to Philip B. Sharpe---also told me "This is a very important revolver." (The fellow I bought it from had had it for ten years----with no letter.) His comment on my dumb luck: "I guess that will teach me."
Will it teach you?

I don’t think there would be space for three guns on the letter request form if multiple requests were an undue burden. There is no limit like on the SWCA ship date questions to Roy. I rather suspect it would save paper and bookkeeping.

What the Heck did post #12 mean? Im looking at a Letter request form.
There are three spaces? Roy does not like three at a time, so do one at a time. Its 3rd grade math. So Love from Mike.

Mike, I think you are looking at the letter request for SWHF research. That's only got space for one, but that goes to Bill Cross, not Roy if I'm correctly informed.

A reasonable question---perhaps a bit odd considering the surroundings, but entirely reasonable.
This first part may appear to be a non-response response--circular at best, but we have to start somewhere. He said "This is a very important revolver." because it was given to Sharpe---as was Registered Magnum #2---as likely were more than a few others.
Okay, why were these favors bestowed on Sharpe? That came to pass because S&W felt indebted to Sharpe---he being the individual they (S&W) deemed to be responsible for the development of the .357 Magnum cartridge. As an aside, he also came to be the Gun Editor of a magazine whose name escapes me---and I reckon S&W hoped he might say a few kind words about their guns in the magazine---that being one of the many ways of the world.
I suspect it would be staggeringly redundant to comment on the impact made to S&W's well being by this cartridge---and their revolver to suit, but trust me---there are those who figure it saved their bacon---and at a time it needed saving.
Given an interest in this sort of thing, you can read all about it in any number of books---the most recent of which is also perhaps the most enlightening. It is titled D.B. Wesson's Scrapbook. And it's not a book carrying that name---it's a recreation----actually a restoration of just that---D.B.Wesson's Scrapbook (the sure enough real thing).
I believe David Carroll has some copies left. I don't know why he has copies left. Were I to comment on possible reasons it might be poorly received----never mind the accuracy of such comments.
Ralph Tremaine
And if/when anybody asks who David Carroll is---and/or how to contact him, I'm going to let someone else stick their neck out----although they might just answer the question---and let it go at that.
